Santa Girl | Blogmas Day 14

 Hey Guys x

I found this film on Netflix and kept it on the backburner in case I ever got tired of the Hallmark tropes. I'm not quite tired yet, but I definitely need an injection of something different!

Cassie Claus (Jennifer Stone) is Santa's (Barry Bostwick) only daughter. He wants her to take over the family business, starting with an arranged marriage. But before that happens, Cassie wants to fulfil one wish of her own - going to college.

I went into this movie with really low expectations, and because of that, I actually ended up really liking it.

From the premise, it's clear that this is a unique idea. In the grand scheme of Christmas movies, it's not like we've never seen a premise like this (it definitely reminded me of Elf), but it is unique compared to the movies that I've been reviewing (and the ones dominating Netflix and Amazon Prime).

It's hard to work out what age-group this is made for. Movies set in university are usually geared towards teenage audiences, but a lot of the movie felt like it was made for ages much younger than that.

However, the movie did improve significantly once Cassie actually got to college and started meeting the right people. The college part of the movie was actually really enjoyable.

One thing I loved was the friendship/chemistry/relationship between Cassie and Sam (Devon Werkheiser). Their interactions were my favourite part of the film, and they're definitely a contender for Best Blogmas Couple.

I found that this story was, in part, more interesting than a lot of Christmas movies marketed at adults. The one thing Hallmark Christmas movies need sometimes is a little bit of magic.

One of the twists in the movie interested me. It seemed unnecessary, and I thought it was only there to provide conflict. But as I look back on the movie, I see that everything happened for a reason, was thought out, and made sense. The conflicts within the film do a good job of advancing the plot, and nothing feels unnecessary.

While the premise of the film tells you that's it's all about Christmas, it isn't actually a Christmassy film at all. It might make you feel a bit festive, but mostly you're watching it as a movie that happens to be focused on fantastical characters.

Overall, go in with low expectations and you might end up loving this, like I did.
