21 Bridges | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This has been on Amazon Prime Video for a little while. I was never really particularly interested in it, because it seemed like a generic cop film, but I ended up watching it on a whim. Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman) is a detective for the NYPD. One night, while searching for two men who killed members of the police force, it is decided that all 21 bridges out of Manhattan will be closed in order to stop the suspects from escaping. But as the chase continues, Andre begins to wonder if he is in pursuit of the right people. I enjoyed this film a lot more than I thought I would. It's not an amazing, life-changing film, but it's definitely better than the average cop movie. It actually starts off as just that, the average cop movie. There's nothing that really sets the story apart. It's great that our protagonist is morally grey right from the beginning of the film. Not only does it make the character more interesting, but it makes the whole film more interes

The High Note | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I remember seeing the trailers for this film, and instantly wanting to watch it. Not only do I really like the two main actors involved, but I also like musicals and/or films based on music, so I made a note to watch this when I could. Grace Davis (Tracee Ellis Ross) is a singer whose career, while amazing, is starting to feel a bit stale. Her assistant, Maggie (Dakota Johnson) is an aspiring producer, and thinks that she knows exactly how to revive Grace's career. Except she has no experience, and Grace barely knows she exists. Can these women work together in order to reinvigorate Grace's career before everyone forgets who she is? I really liked this movie. I thought it was going to be a bit generic and formulaic, so it definitely took me by surprise. The concept of the film feels really safe and familiar. Even if you haven't seen a film exactly like this, the basic concept of two opposites having to work together to save something (in this case, a career) is

365 Days | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This is a Polish Netflix film that has been getting a lot of attention, mainly for either the incredulity of the plot, or the multiple sex scenes. But either way, after hearing certain things, I definitely wanted to review it! Massimo (Michele Morrone) is a member of the Italian Mafia who meets a woman called Laura (Anna-Maria Sieklucka) and immediately falls for her. His plan? To kidnap Laura, giving her 365 days to fall in love with him. But will Laura fall for the man she's trapped with? Okay, so... The plot of the film before the couple meet is flimsy at best - it is clear that the writers didn't care what was happening before Massimo kidnaps Laura, and it's really hard for the audience to care too.  But even after they meet, the plot is ridiculous, and there are so many parts of it that just don't make sense. The suspension of disbelief for the audience has to be incredibly high to even think about entertaining the realities of the film. Aside from the s

Queen & Slim | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I'd heard about this film for a long time before it came out. And while the majority of the things I'd heard were positive, I had heard some things about the ending that made me really reluctant to watch it - which is why this review has taken so long! Not to spoil anything, but don't go into this film thinking that everything will end happily ever after. Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Slim (Daniel Kaluuya) are driving home from a first date when they are pulled over by a police officer. When the situation escalates, Slim kills the officer in self-defence, leading Queen and Slim to go on the run, hoping to leave the country before the police catch up with them. But will they be able to save themselves before it's too late? I really liked this film. I always knew that I probably would, but I also thought I would find it really disturbing. And while it was disturbing, to an extent, it's still enjoyable, and definitely worth watching. To start, the film pret

X-Men: Dark Phoenix | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I waited so long to watch this film that I wasn't going to write a review on it. However, after the first 10/15 minutes, I decided to write a review, because there's a bit that I want to say. And I guess I owe it to my love of the X-Men series to review the last one. During a rescue mission, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is struck by a blast of energy that changes her, and the rest of the X-Men, in ways they couldn't have imagined. For the most part, I did enjoy this film, particularly in the first half. The problem with prequels is that you already know the eventual fate of these characters, so there are no real stakes. And the fact that this is the fourth X-Men prequel just makes that even more apparent. It suffered because we know too much about the future of these characters. However, even from the beginning, we know that this is a much better story than 'Apocalypse' - which wasn't awful, but the story wasn't as tight as it could have been. Whethe

Like A Boss | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This wasn't a film that I was particularly excited to see, but a combination of the fact that I'm a fan of Rose Byrne, the premise seemed relatively interesting, and having time on my hands on a Sunday evening meant that I picked this. Mia (Tiffany Haddish) and Mel (Rose Byrne) are best friends who run their own (struggling) business. When they are offered the chance to get their business bought out by Claire Luna (Salma Hayek), the friends disagree, and through navigating the world of business, their friendship gets put to the test. I didn't really enjoy this film. It was enjoyable enough, but it wasn't one that you'd have particularly strong feelings about. Byrne and Haddish have a really interesting dynamic, particularly because they are known for playing vastly different roles, so you wouldn't expect to see them gel together as well as they have. And their different dynamics work in their favour. They have good chemistry. However, the film doesn&#

The Lovebirds | Film Review

Hey Guys x I was looking forward to watching this for so long, mainly because I'm a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani and his brand of comedy, so I knew that even if the film wasn't that good, I would enjoy him in it. And of course, Issa Rae was a welcome addition. A couple fresh from a break-up get caught up in a murder mystery that sees them as the perpetrators. Desperate to clear their names, Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) spend the night getting into the most bizarre of situations, as they discover the truth behind the night's mysteries. I really enjoyed this movie. I knew that I would probably like it, but I ended up loving it, and I'm so glad! It is funny from literally the first two scenes. Both of the actors are funny in their own right, but putting them together is a stroke of genius. They play off of each other really well and both have such great comedic timing that they would work really well together, whatever the plot of the movie. Speaking of t

Book Review #79: In The Time We Lost by Carrie Hope Fletcher

Image
Hey Guys x I've made it no secret that I'm a huge fan of Carrie Hope Fletcher. I followed her on YouTube before I even knew that YouTubers were a thing, and I've bought physical copies of every book she's written. I even have two of 'All That She Can See' (one hardback and one signed paperback), so there was no way that I wasn't going to read this book - which I had pre-ordered well before it came out. After facing more tragedy than the average person, Luna has left home for the quiet Scottish town of Ondingside, where she can keep herself to herself and write her next novel. But Luna finds that she can't be as inconspicuous as she wants to be in a town where she is the only new resident. And when a freak July snow storm causes the whole town to stand still in more ways than one, will Luna find more than just a novel in Ondingside? I really wanted to like this book. In fact, I wanted to love it. And I didn't, at all. It feels almost unfair
