Book Review #141: The Final Gambit by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Image
After nearly a year following Tobias Hawthorne's rules, Avery is ready to claim her inheritance. But when a familiar face arrives at the mansion with a mystery to solve, Avery and the Hawthorne brothers must drop everything to play one final game. A game with a deadly consequence. I reviewed the first two books of the series, The Inheritance Games and The Hawthorne Legacy  and while I liked the second a lot more than the first, neither really grabbed me. But the ending of the second made me curious enough to pick up the third, so that's what I did! Again, while I think this was better than the first book, I didn't love it. For a start, the ending of the second book was a bit convoluted, which made the start of the third book a bit confusing. But thankfully everything was explained well and in an interesting way, rather than the reader just being told what had happened. I really liked that it got right into the action and straight into another mystery. I found it strange ...

After the events of 'The Inheritance Games', Avery still doesn't know why Tobias Hawthorne left her his entire fortune. All she knows for sure is that she isn't a Hawthorne. But when she discovers something that suggests she's closer to the Hawthorne family than she ever imagined, Avery, along with the mysterious Hawthorne brothers, try to find the truth once and for all . I picked this book up on the spur of the moment, because while I didn't love the first, I was kind of curious about what came next. I'm so glad I decided to pick this up, because I liked it a lot more than the first one! One of my criticisms the first time around was that I felt Avery was quite juvenile and childish. This time around was entirely different - I really liked being in her head, and she definitely seemed more matu...

It took me a long time to get into this story, and a really long time to actually read it, but I finally finished it! Avery Grambs' life completely changes when she is left an enormous fortune by a billionaire she has never met. But to receive her inheritance from Tobias Hawthorne, she has to move into Hawthorne House and live for a year with the family that has just been disinherited - including Tobias's four mysterious grandsons, hellbent on discovering who Avery is, and how she stole their inheritance. This was an okay read. Maybe if I read it over a quicker time period I'd feel more positively about it, but it never really captured my interest. I liked that the reader gets to know Avery really quickly. We are always in her head, and therefore always on her side. Having said that, I found Avery quite juvenile and childish, especially towards the beginning of the story. She is supposed to be young, but it seemed like she was almost made too childish so that she could have...
