Once Upon a Time In Hollywood | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I didn't really know much about this movie, and ended up seeing it on a whim. I knew that it was a big deal, that it was Quentin Tarantino's ninth film, and that it starred some of the biggest names in Hollywood, but I didn't know much about the actual story. Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his long-time stunt double and best friend Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) live their lives dealing with the fact that the film industry, and Hollywood itself, is changing before their very eyes. There's so much more encompassed in the movie than the small description I gave, but that's the simplest way to describe it, and a lot of the film is about this singular idea. Now, I've seen both good and bad reviews of this movie, and because I can completely see both points of view about it, I have to say that while I liked it, I didn't love it. But there were things about it that I did love. For a start, as someone who is obsessed with movies and the film

Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I knew practically nothing about this movie before I went to see it last night, but I'm a sucker for a good horror movie, and anything that has 'scary' in the title can't be that bad, surely? Especially anything with Guillermo Del Toro's name attached! Stella (Zoe Margaret Colletti) and her friends break into an old haunted house with a terrifying history on Halloween. Once inside, they find a book of scary stories belonging to one of the home's former residents. However, these scary stories seem to have a habit of coming true. But can Stella discover the source of the stories, and the true intent behind them, before she loses everyone she loves? As I said, I didn't know anything about the film. But going off of the fact that Guillermo Del Toro is heavily involved in it, the trailer (which was great, if a bit spoilery) and some of the reviews online, I went in with high expectations. And while I liked the film, I didn't like it as much

What Men Want | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I was completely uninterested in seeing this film when I first heard about it. I'm not particularly opposed to all the remakes that are coming out right now, but the original version of this film, 'What Women Want' was one of the staple films of my childhood. Maybe it shouldn't have been, but I remember watching it repeatedly when I was young and it was definitely one of my favourite movies, so I kind of felt a loyalty to that version, and as such wasn't that interested in this one. Nevertheless, I have seen it, and it did surprise me. Ali Davis (Taraji P Henson) is a sports agent who has just been passed up for a huge promotion that she believes was rightfully hers. After visiting a psychic and drowning her sorrows, Ali wakes up and discovers that she can hear men's thoughts. But when Ali starts to use her newfound abilities to advance both her career and her love life, she discovers that hearing men's thoughts might not be a good thing aft

The Bone Collector | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I never really review old/er movies, and I have no idea why. I guess it's the thought process that, if a film isn't new, everyone will have already seen it. But judging by how many older movies I've been watching, and how many people I know who have yet to see them, I can't see how it would be a bad idea to bring some older movies back into current circulation - starting with this one, which came out in 1999. Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie) is a police officer who is the person to find the first body in a series of seemingly unsolvable murders. The person needed to solve the case is quadriplegic forensic criminology expert  Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington). Together, Rhyme and Amelia try to get to the bottom of the crimes before more people become victims of this sadistic killer. This is a movie that both my parents told me to watch, which meant that going in, I had really high expectations. The beginning scene of the movie, in the taxi, is the kin

The Intruder | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I remember seeing the trailer for this film a few times and thinking 'I really want to see that' every time I saw it, so of course when it finally came out, I had to see it! Scott (Michael Ealy) and Annie (Meagan Good) buy a house from widower Charlie (Dennis Quaid). However, soon it becomes clear that Charlie isn't willing to let the house go - but can the couple figure out the truth about Charlie's infatuation with their home before it's too late? I enjoyed this movie. It's not the best thriller I've ever seen, but it was fun and entertaining. For a start, there was really good chemistry between Michael Ealy and Meagan Good. From the start, you believe in them as a couple, which is great because the foundation of their relationship is important throughout the movie. It's the kind of film where, if you didn't read the description, you would have no idea what the film is about. When it starts off, there's no clues or tensio

Book Review #66: One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Image
Hey Guys x This is a book that you might have heard of, because it's quite popular. However, I hadn't heard anything about it until I actually bought it. And the sole reason that I bought it was because it sounded so good. 5 kids from 5 different walks of life end up in detention together. However, when one of those kids dies, the other four are the prime suspects. Are they in it together? Did they plan to kill him because of his gossip site? Are any of them actually guilty? While reading this book, I thought I knew exactly how my review was going to go. Because I started off completely LOVING this book. For a start, all of the main four characters are amazing. Addy, Cooper, Bronwyn and Nate are so different, but the slight connections between them made the book so interesting because, not only do you get to see them through each other's eyes, but then you get to go into their own heads to find out exactly who they are and what they're going through. The w

One Of Us Is Lying - Spoiler Review!

Image
Hey Guys x If you haven't read my original review of this book, read it HERE , before you read this one. Also, if you haven't read this book (and also managed to miss the title), this review will be full of SPOILERS , so avoid this post if you don't want to know what happens. Now that that's out of the way, let's get on with the review. I won't really be talking about the things that I liked in this review, it's purely for me to vent/rant about the things that I didn't like, which I couldn't do without spoiling the main plot points. Now, in a book called One Of Us Is Lying about a murder taking place, you'd expect one of the people to be lying about the murder. So the fact that none of the four did it, or are even involved other than passively, was so freaking disappointing to me! How can you set up a whole murder mystery, draw us in with the four suspects, and then make the big twist that the boy who was killed actually committed

Destroyer | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x If I'm remembering rightly, this film came out at the beginning of the year, which is peak Oscar time, so like many other films, I didn't get to see this until recently. However, I have finally seen it, and I'm so glad I have! Cop Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) goes on an undercover mission that nearly destroys her. Now, years later, the consequences of her actions are still weighing her down. But when the man who took everything from her comes back into her life, she has to find him and exact revenge - whatever it takes. I loved this movie. I loved it so much that I still get excited when I remember it. For a start, it's the kind of story that sucks you in right away. From the first scene. you find yourself invested in this story, or more specifically, in the character of Erin Bell. But I'll talk more about her later. But just in general, the film has a really interesting set of 3 dimensional characters. No one is 100% bad or good, and those are t

July Favourites | 2019

Image
Hey Guys x This is a very late Favourites, but let's get into it anyway! Favourite Movie: Destroyer My review of this was supposed to go up this week, but I bumped it for a more recent film instead, which means that you'll definitely be getting it next week, so I can't say much about it here. But if you get the chance to watch this movie - watch it! Favourite TV Show (1): Orange Is The New Black I am never up to date with shows. All the shows that I watch have either been over for years, I'm really behind on them, or I started getting up to date and then they got cancelled (Proven Innocent, Speechless etc.). Orange Is The New Black is one of only about two or three shows that I can say I keep up with it and watch it as soon as I can once it's released. And given that this was the final season, obviously I couldn't not watch it. And while some of the past seasons haven't been the best, this last one definitely did not disappoint. Every character h

Secret Obsession | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This is a new Netflix movie, and I had no desire to watch it until I saw so many people talking about it, either in a really negative way, or basically saying that it was bad enough to be good, so of course, I had to see for myself if it was as bad as everyone said! A woman called Jennifer (Brenda Song) gets into an accident and wakes up with amnesia. Luckily, her devoted husband (Mike Vogel) is on hand to make sure that she's getting the care she needs. But Jennifer's life isn't as it seems. Will she remember the truth in time to save herself? I have so much to say about this film, including a comparison that I've seen a lot of other people make, but I don't want to spoil either movie (because the movie that I'd compare this to is really good), but the thing is, because of that other movie, this one is just completely unoriginal. The only thing that's different is that the plot twist that's expertly revealed in that other film is quic

Euphoria (2017) | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x This seems to be one of those obscure films that hardly anyone has heard of. I added it to my 'to watch' list ages ago, based on the fact that it stars and was produced by Alicia Vikander, who is one of my favourite actresses. Two estranged sisters, Ines (Alicia Vikander) and Emilie (Eva Green) reconnect by going on holiday to a remote area. But what are the true motivations of this trip? And what secrets are the sisters hiding? There were a lot of things that I liked about the film, however as a whole it wasn't my cup of tea. For a start, one of the best things about the film is the tension that's created from literally the first second on screen. But even more than that, you can feel the tension between these sisters. You know nothing about them, their lives, or their relationship, but you get everything you need by just watching them look at each other. Another great thing about film was how clear the theme of family/sisterly love became throug

First Man | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I remember wanting to see this in the cinema when it first came out, but I think it came out at a time when a lot of movies were coming out (A Star Is Born, for one) and I had to prioritise because the cinema isn't cheap! So it fell by the wayside and I didn't actually remember it until it came out on the Sky Premiere channels. This is a film about NASA's mission to put a man on the moon, and focuses on the life of Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling), including his family and everything that came together for him to be the first man on the moon. For a start, everything about the first scene is great - the visuals, the atmosphere, everything. It sets the film up really well, and I noticed that it used sound really well - which would definitely have been great if I'd seen it in the cinema. Even though the majority of people know at least a little bit of the story of Neil Armstrong, it's so easy to see Gosling's character as completely original. You
