Blogmas 2020!

Image
Hey Guys x It's 28th November, which means that it's almost Blogmas! As usual, I am doing Blogmas - I couldn't miss it.  I thought a lot about how I would do Blogmas this year, as I've tried it a few different ways. Last year, I did 24 Christmas movie reviews, and I have to say that I absolutely loved it, and have such fond memories from last Christmas because of it. So this year, I've decided to do exactly what I did last year - 24 Christmas movie reviews! I'm so excited to get started - this year I feel like I have so much less time to dedicate to movies, but that's another reason why I want to do Blogmas like this. So I'm forced to make time for films. Like last year, I'll mostly be reviewing films from Netflix and Amazon Prime, but I'm gonna be less strict about that this time around - mostly because I don't want to run out of films! Also like last year, I'll be ignoring my usual star rating, instead rating the movies based on: Origin

Rebecca (2020) | Film Review

Hey Guys x I didn't know that much about this film before watching it, but I had seen a lot of mixed reviews for it. Once I read what it was actually about, and found out that it was based on a book by Daphne Du Maurier (who also wrote 'The Birds', which I loved) I decided to see why so many people were talking about it. A girl (Lily James) falls in love and marries a wealthy man (Armie Hammer), immediately moving into his family estate. But when she gets there, she realises that she is living in the shadow of her husband's first wife, Rebecca. I have mixed feelings about this film - some of it I loved, and some of it I didn't. One of the things the film got right, in my opinion, was the beginning of the relationship. I thought, even though there was a sinister undertone throughout the movie, their relationship was really endearing and sweet. But there is also a tension simmering under the surface that you can't quite put your finger on. Although the events at

A Nice Girl Like You | Film Review

Hey Guys x I remember seeing this when I was scrolling through Netflix and being really intrigued. I like Lucy Hale as an actress, and I'd never seen a film with a premise quite like this one, so I thought it would be an interesting watch. After Lucy Neal (Lucy Hale) is dumped by her boyfriend over her lack of sexual expertise, she creates a sex-based to-do list that leads her on a journey of love and self-discovery. I didn't like this movie as much as I thought I might. I like the premise, and it does what it says it will do, but for me it just wasn't executed in the right way. The cardinal sin of this movie is that it is boring.   This starts with the character of Lucy, who is not only boring, but also a bit unlikeable (at least at the beginning of the film). I am completely fine with her being a prude, and being inexperienced and embarrassed. But there's a way for her to be a prude without being boring. We could have got to know who she is as a person, rather than h

The Boys in the Band | Film Review

Hey Guys x I remember really wanting to see this play when it was on Broadway in 2018, because I'm a huge fan of some of the actors in it, so I'm really glad that they made it into a film! In 1968, a group of gay men are having a party when they are interrupted by an unexpected visitor. I really liked this movie. Because it was originally a play, it's really dialogue-heavy, but the dialogue is written so well that you don't even notice how much of it there is.  Speaking of the dialogue, it is so fast-paced and familiar. You really believe that these people are friends, and that what they're saying is true. Part of this is due to the fact that all of these characters are so three-dimensional and fleshed out. They could all stand on their own without the backdrop of this story. But as well as being fleshed out, the characters feel really real, even the one or two who are over-the-top. You always feel like this is a real group of people.   For me, the most important c

Love, Guaranteed | Film Review

Hey Guys x This is a Netflix rom-com that had an interesting plot. Of course, all rom-coms follow a similar formula in one way or another, but this one felt a bit more unique than they usually do, so I thought I'd give it a try. Nick (Damon Wayans Jr.) signs up for a dating site that guarantees love. When he doesn't find love after 1000 dates, he decides to sue the company with the help of lawyer, Susan (Rachel Leigh Cook). However, when the pair meet and start working together, they discover that maybe love isn't hard to find after all. I didn't love this film, even knowing from the start that it would be a generic rom-com. The first thing I noticed about it was the score. Now, while the score was beautiful, for me it did too much. It tells the audience exactly how the characters are feeling, rather than accompanying their feelings, and at times was a bit overpowering. The storyline is unique, if a bit far-fetched. However, because rom-coms have become such a saturate

The Good Liar | Film Review

Hey Guys x This one kind of snuck up on me. I had heard about it in passing, without much interest. But when it came out on the Sky Premiere channel, I was immediately taken in by the premise and decided to give it a chance. Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) is a con artist. His latest conquest? Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren), a wealthy widow who invites Roy into her life, and home. But when Roy begins to develop real feelings for Betty, what should have been a straightforward scam becomes a dangerous game that will change both of their lives forever. I wish I could describe this with spoilers, because that's the only way to get across how good this film is! Even without spoilers, the initial premise is an interesting one. It's not the most original story ever, but what makes it more original is the fact that the film has an older cast. This doesn't happen very often, and really does change the dynamics of the film. While you can see how naïve Betty is, the film also does a good
