Happy Blogmas Day 14!

Today's review is of Netflix film 'Sierra Burgess Is A Loser'. I heard a lot of people talking about this when it first came out, and it got praised and slated in almost equal measure. I waited until now to watch it so that I could include it in Blogmas, and I have to say that, it wasn't what I thought it would be.

When Veronica (Kristine Froseth) gives cute 'loser' Jamey (Noah Centineo) the number of another loser in an act of high school bitchiness, the romance that unfolds between him and Sierra Burgess (Shannon Purser) is something that no one expected.

Something interesting about the movie is that you don't see the first few texts between Jamey and Sierra, you hear about them second hand. Because of that, the audience is thrust right into the main plot of the film with relatively no time to adjust. This mirrors the way that Sierra fell into the situation, and why it was able to spiral out of control.

There is an interesting dynamic between Sierra and Jamey in the sense that they are both insecure, and in that way, are evenly matched. Jamey is worried about impressing the 'super-hot' Veronica, and Sierra is insecure because she thinks that Jamey won't like her for her.

Speaking of insecurities, throughout the film we see that all of the teenage characters are insecure about something. This adds a sense of realism. In a lot of teenage-based films, there's always the character that thinks they're perfect. This film, once you get to really know the characters, doesn't have this problem.

The first phone conversation between Sierra and Jamey is perfect, completely and utterly. The dialogue is so right, and it's great that this is the first time we see them interact. It is the time when you as the audience actually see them fall for each other, and it's done brilliantly.

As perfect as that was, though, the friendship between Sierra and Veronica is more heartwarming and lovely than the actual romance. The only thing that taints this friendship is the fact that the things they actually do are awful.

You might have heard about this, but the 'pretending to be deaf' scene was for sure in bad taste, and could have been done so many different ways. This, and many other parts of the story, are really far-fetched.

The supposed antagonist of the film, Veronica, is actually a much more likeable character than Sierra herself. She is much more layered and has more development than every single other character. Sierra, on the other hand, doesn't really have a lot of development, and she brings everything bad that happens on herself.

Overall, I would recommend it because it's a fun and interesting film to watch, but it definitely has its problems!
