Girl Talk: Insecurities

Why are we so worried about what other people think?

I have decided that, every Friday on this blog, I would do a post that was specific to girls, just because, as a girl, this is something that I know a lot about. The first thing that came to my mind when I decided to do this was insecurities.

Most, if not all, girls are insecure about some part of their body, whether it be their stomach or their thighs. This is not because we just like to complain about things that no one else can see, but because we know out bodies better than anyone else. We may look flawless to the people around us, but it is us who can feel the extra fat around our stomachs, or see the acne from beneath our skin.

Sometimes, it is hard. If we are seen as really pretty, any insecurities that we have may be viewed as attention seeking. If we complain about how 'fat' we feel, people may think that we are saying this to be told how 'thin' we actually are. But for some of us, these insecurities are all that we can see. We can't see the goodness in us that everyone else can see because we are really focused on the bad things that we see in ourselves.

A lot of the time, the insecurities that we think we have stem from the picture above. 'Atelphoia', the fear of not being good enough. We may look at our stomachs or our thighs in a negative way because we feel like they should be different, like we should be different. This could be because, we want to look the best in front of certain people. This doesn't have to be potential love interests, this could be as simple as 'wanting to look good while we change for P.E.' or 'wanting to look good in the latest fashions'.

The reason that I particularly wanted to do this post was because, I wanted to say this: No matter who you are, or what you think you look like, there are people in the world who will love you unconditionally for who you are, rather than who you want to be. You will meet people who will make you feel like your insecurities are a bad memory that you can lock away and never open again. Of course we all have things that we hate about our bodies, but we shouldn't let that define us. And it we have bigger thighs or a bigger stomach than some of our friends, who cares? If we are genuinely happy with who we are then it shouldn't matter what we look like.
