Book Review #17: Ten Things We Shouldn't Have Done by Sarah Mlynowski

This is the first book that I have read by Sarah Mlynowski, but I am definitely going to be buying more of her books! I'm always excited to read a new book, and mostly have expectations of the book that they don't quite live up to, however, this book surpassed any expectations that I may have had. And I've read it so many times since buying it that it's practically falling apart!

Meet April. With her best friend Vi, she is about to live a teenagers dream. By lying to her dad, she and Vi have their own house! No parents, no rules, no responsibilities (at least none that they are owning up to). What teenagers wouldn't want to spend a year with their best friends, doing whatever they want, whenever they want? But things that sound so amazing, never go as planned. Whether they're skipping school, breaking and entering, losing their virginity or harbouring a fugitive, things with April and Vi are never boring!

If you can't tell already, I completely love this book! The character of April is great because she's who most of us are! She's been hurt, she has trouble trusting people (particularly her boyfriend Noah), but when she moves in with Vi, she completely comes into her own and becomes the best friend that we'd all like to have (or that we pretend we are). This is April's coming-of-age novel, she leaves home not knowing how to work a dishwasher or knowing what bills she has to pay, but she forces herself to grow up, to prove to her parents that she can be by herself, she'll be the last woman standing. And she does pretty well for herself!

What was good?
The characters are really realistic. My favourites being Dean, Hudson and Marissa because, when looking at them, you realise that you know someone exactly like them! They're also great additions for Vi and April because they balance them out and give the story more depth, making them great secondary characters. But what's great about them is that, when the story has finished, you find yourself wanting a sequel, just so that you can find out what happened to each of the characters after the last sentence was written. If Sarah Mlynowski is writing a sequel to this book, believe me when I say that I will be the first in line to buy it!

What was bad?
The only thing that annoyed me about the book was the relationship between April and Noah. I won't reveal too much about the story, but I don't understand why April put up with him for so long, given the way that he was acting! And as well as this, why was Vi doing work-out DVDs in the middle of the night?

Overall
First of all, I have to say that this is definitely a story for older readers, so if you're under 16, I don't recommend that you read this book. However, if you're over 16, then you'll enjoy this so much. We all want the freedom that April and Vi have, and we'd probably do the same things that they do if we had what they have!
Seriously, you will not regret buying this book!

Thank you for reading
