Supergirl | Film Review

When faced with a dangerous enemy, Supergirl (Milly Alcock) teams up with an unlikely ally for revenge.

I had seen all of the bad reviews of this film before watching it, and while I didn't expect it to be as good as Superman, I was surprised by how much hate it was getting.

I actually didn't hate the film, but it definitely had a lot of flaws.

I really liked that they set it on another planet, rather than doing another story set on Earth. It would have been nice to see more of the planet and how the world was different to Earth.

One of the first flaws of this movie is that it assumes Supergirl's appearance in the Superman movie was enough to make the audience care about Kara, and it really isn't. So because of that, no work was put into making us care about her.

But in addition to that, Kara isn't as funny or likeable here as she was in her small Superman scene. And while she doesn't have to be, at times it doesn't feel like the same character.

I kept waiting for the movie to settle in and find its feet, but it never really did.

There were moments when Kara's existence felt rooted in Superman/Clark, which took away from her as her own character. Even when speaking about her family on Krypton the only named character is Superman's father.

I liked the flashbacks to Krypton, though they lasted longer than they needed to.

The story is entertaining while watching, but you don't care as much about it as you need to.

I was looking forward to seeing Jason Momoa as Lobo, but the character didn't feel entirely different to Aquaman.

It felt odd that both Supergirl and Superman used their dog as the life that needs saving to make the audience care more. Each time, we know Krypto will be safe so the stakes never feel particularly high.

None of Kara's relationships with the people around her were developed enough. It was really nice seeing her interact with David Corenswet's Superman, which was one of the best parts of the movie, but everything else needed more development.

Most of the characters being unknown to the masses works against the movie.

Overall, I thought the film was fine. Comparing it to Superman makes it seem worse than it is, and it probably isn't one that sparks a re-watch, but it would be nice to see the character again with some better material to work with.

5/10
