Don't Say Good Luck | Film Review

Sophie (Sunny Sandler) just got the lead in the school musical. But when life at home takes a dramatic turn, she is forced to balance competing priorities with the fear of a changing future.

This movie wasn't really on my radar until I saw people talking about it on social media. I didn't know much of what it was about, which ended up being a good thing.

I liked this film a lot more than I initially thought I might.

I really liked the way music was incorporated. One thing I had seen on social media was a clip of the main character singing, and I really liked that music was used throughout rather than just in one scene.

The actors are all great, but in particular I really loved Melanie Lynskey and Max Greenfield in these roles.

You connect with this family really quickly and only get more invested in their lives as the movie continues. That said, I would have liked for some of the relationships to be explored a bit more. This is a mother/daughter story, but there are other family connections that also had potential to grow throughout the movie.

The actors have great chemistry, and all of their relationships feel authentic. The cast is great and all play off each other really well.

It's well written, engaging and entertaining.

Despite the overall story not being as original as it could be, it's clear that an effort was made to make it as original as this tried-and-tested story can be.

It was more powerful than I expected. You can really feel what the characters are feeling, and because there's no 'villain', you can understand their frustration of not being able to direct their feelings anywhere.

I didn't love how abrupt the ending was, but I've had that complaint frequently lately, so it might just be something that's becoming popular in movie making.

Overall I really liked this movie. It was poignant and sweet with a really powerful message behind it. It wasn't as original as it could have been, and I feel like there were characters that could have been explored more, but it's definitely worth seeing.

7.5/10
