Saw | 100 Movies Bucket List
We're down to the last 3 movies!
This is one that I was saving. Not only is it one of my favourite horror movies, but this is the start of my favourite franchise!
So I was really looking forward to finally getting around to it!
For a start, the team behind this film have gone on to make so many iconic horror movies.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell are amazing at what they do - together and apart, so it's really nice to see where it began.
It's also great to see Whannell acting in this one. He created a great character in Adam and became so important to the franchise even if he wasn't in it for as long as he should have been.
And Cary Elwes was also great as Dr Gordon, and without spoiling the other movies too much, it's always nice to see him as this character.
But speaking of the actors, this was the start of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, and what perfect casting! This is an iconic character played perfectly, and the fact that it has spanned so many films is amazing. From the first film to the last, Jigsaw is so iconic that even in the ones he's not in, he's what you're thinking about.
All of the characters feel real and authentic, and that's why the film works so well. We can really relate to the terrifying idea of being an ordinary person trapped in this situation.
There are a few reasons this film spawned a franchise. One is because of how interesting and well written our villain is (one of the best villains in horror history) but the other is because of how great this first story is.
We don't know what's going on, we don't understand this world, but we're locked in and intrigued from the first moment. Even though we're thrown into the middle of everything, the characters are too. So we feel like we're right there with them as we root (or don't root) for them to escape.
And as the story goes on and we learn more about them, and about Jigsaw, we just get deeper and deeper in. There's not a second that feels slow or mundane. This film completely hooked me when I first saw it and 10 films later it still has me.
It goes through so many different beats. We start with the confusion of the characters, and as the story reveals more and we understand what's happening, we become fascinated by the twists and turns.
And then there's the ending. Which I can't overstate, is one of my favourite movie endings in cinema history. Everything that led up to it, the way it was done, I'll never get over it!
This film is a classic for a reason. It's a perfect contained story, while opening the door for an entire franchise of interesting stories. Of all the horror movies on the list this year, some of which have been really great, nothing tops this. For me this film in itself is right up there with the best of horror. And if you haven't seen this film, you need to, especially if you're into horror!
