The Departed | 100 Movies Bucket List

 

And just like that, we're on film 99! 

This is one that I deliberately left until second to last because it's one of my all-time favourite movies.

I don't even know where to start when I talk about all the reasons I love this film.

But let's start with the cast. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Ray Winstone and Vera Farmiga within a list of other great actors.

With a cast like this, you expect good things and they certainly deliver! All of the roles are really well written, authentic and fleshed-out, and the actors play their parts so well.

In a story like this where there are so many secrets, twists and surprises, the audience's feelings rely on how we feel about these characters and the cast is a really important part of that. Because the actors are so amazing, the audience gets to be really involved in the lives of these characters.

But more than the characters, the film is so good because of the story.

You're engrossed from the very first second until the very last second. Every time there's an unexpected twist you're completely locked in to see what happens next.

As far as Scorsese movies go, while this isn't my absolute favourite (because nothing beats 'Shutter Island' for me), I'd definitely say it's the best. 

I think my favourite thing about the movie is the way everything ties up in the end. The last 10-15 minutes of the movie is so unexpected, so shocking, and yet completely and utterly perfect. It couldn't have ended in any other way.

I was actually quite surprised that of all the Scorsese movies, this one was given a place on the bucket list over more talked-about classics like Taxi Driver or Goodfellas, but I loved that it was on the list. It's iconic, one of my favourite movies ever, and one that everyone should watch!
