Oddity | Film Review
After the murder of her twin sister, Darcy (Carolyn Bracken) uses haunted items to exact revenge on those responsible.
I knew nothing about this film until I sat down to watch it, and if I'm honest, I didn't really have high hopes. The premise, while interesting, is vague - which can either be a good thing or a bad thing.
Thankfully this time around it was a good thing, because I absolutely loved this film!
Going in blind for a film like this is really fun - you're completely along for the ride from the second it starts.
The opening scene set the tone really well. It was tense, scary, and pulls you in so well that you're immediately connected to the characters.
And this continues throughout the film. The filmmakers expertly created a creepy, tense atmosphere that never really went away. Everything that happens keeps the audience completely glued to the screen while also hiding behind their hands waiting for the next scare.
I loved the dynamic between Darcy and Yana (Caroline Menton). The actresses played off each other really well, and their animosity made for a really interesting side-story within the horror. I also didn't expect to like Yana as much as I did, but she was probably my favourite character.
It was a lot scarier than I was expecting it to be. And yes, some of this fear does rely on jumpscares, which are used really effectively throughout the film, but the actual situation itself is scary enough that even without jumpscares it would still work really well.
The twists may be guessable, but they're still fun to watch, and fun for the characters to uncover/reveal.
Overall, this is an original film with a genuinely scary concept that's tense from beginning to end. It's definitely one to watch if you're a horror fan!
8/10
