The Prodigy | Film Review

Hey Guys x I hadn't heard of this before I saw it, but I'm always searching for more horror movies to see. So of course, I watched it as soon as I got the chance! Parents Sarah (Taylor Schilling) and John (Peter Mooney) were ecstatic when their son Miles (Jackson Robert Scott) was born, and even more ecstatic when it appears that he is developing at a much faster rate than other children his age. But when Miles starts to exhibit unusual behaviours, his parents discover that maybe Miles' development isn't extraordinary after all... maybe it's supernatural. Before watching this film, I thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill demon-child horror, so I was really pleasantly surprised upon watching it to find that it was very different from my initial assumptions. There is a sinister, creepy atmosphere to this film right from the first moment, and this really sets the tone for the rest of the film. You can never quite relax because you have no idea what...

Book Review #64: The Lie by C. L. Taylor

Hey Guys x I've owned this book for ages, but when it came to forming my reading list, I pushed it down because I wanted to get some of the tougher, less exciting reads out of the way. Essentially, I assumed that this would be a book that I'd love, and didn't want to read it too quickly. It's the second C. L. Taylor book I've read, the first of which (The Accident) was amazing, and you can read my review of it HERE . Jane Hughes is a woman who, on the outside, has the perfect life. She has a great boyfriend with a daughter who adores her, a wonderful job, and she's happier than she's ever been. But Jane's life, and her name, are a lie that trace back to the worst moments of her life. When someone makes it clear that they know her secret, how far will she go to protect it? And what exactly happened that made Jane give up her past life? I have problems with this book, and it's really frustrating. In terms of plot, this book was amazing, the...

Murder Mystery | Film Review

Hey Guys x Here's my review of the latest Netflix original movie. Apparently it got something like 30 million views in it's first three days, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. Nick (Adam Sandler) and Audrey Spitz (Jennifer Aniston) are a couple from New York who are flying to Europe when they meet Charles Cavendish (Luke Evans), a rich man who invites them on the trip of a lifetime - a vacation on his family's yacht. But when a gruesome murder takes place on the yacht, and the American couple are framed, they have to work out who the real murderer is, before it's too late. I went into this film with low expectations and came out really pleasantly surprised. First of all, there is a great introduction to Adam Sandler's character. The contrast between being really competent while on the job (he's a detective) and really incompetent at home was so interesting, and a good way of telling the audience exactly who he is before we really know anythi...

Us | Film Review

Hey Guys x I feel like the hype around this film really grew during its promotional season and the first couple of weeks that it was out, but after that everyone stopped talking about it and it basically fell off the face of the earth. A woman called Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong'o) goes back to her childhood home many years after suffering a traumatic incident. Being back there brings up memories, causing Adelaide to fear for her family's safety. But is this all in Adelaide's head, or are the Wilson family truly in danger? I have to say, I thought this film was going to be different. Based on trailers and Jordan Peele's reputation, not only did I expect it to be scarier, but I expected the story to be more impactful. The first thing I noticed was that it had a very similar feel to Peele's first movie 'Get Out', in the sense that it feels sinister from the offset. Whether anything happening on the screen is actually scary or not, you feel a tension...

Booksmart | Film Review

Hey Guys x You've probably heard about this film, so many people have been talking about it since it first came out in the US. However, I have no idea what cinema's are doing with it - in the first two weeks of it being out, I hadn't seen a showing before 8.30pm, which is really inconvenient and annoying, especially when most movies have multiple daily showings, so it was really hard to see it. Nevertheless, I did get the chance to see it, and you should see it too. Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) and Molly (Beanie Feldstein) made the choice to focus on school by avoiding partying, so they could get into great colleges, and it worked! But when they discover that all of their school's underachievers also got into those great colleges, they wonder why they stopped themselves from having the same high school experience as everyone else. To make up for lost time, they decide to spend their last night together before graduation attending the party of the year. But with many little...

Book Review #63: Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

Image
Hey Guys x I had never heard of this book before I bought it. I recognised the name of the author, but hadn't read any of her books, so it never stood out to me. The only reason that I bought it was because I happened to pick it up when I was in Waterstones one day, and one of the employees came over to tell me what an amazing book it was. Then, when I was buying it, a different employee also told me how good it was, which made me really excited to see if I agreed! According to the Tranquillum House Luxury Retreat, 10 days is all it takes to change your life. But when nine people sign up for this retreat, each for a variety of reasons both simple and complicated, most of them are sceptical. For the next ten days, these nine strangers are going to be tested in ways they never expected, and as they discover the secrets behind the 'success' of the resort, they start to wonder - Should they put their trust in the resort's unconventional methods, or should they leave b...

Monsters and Men | Film Review

Hey Guys x I remember hearing about this film months ago, but then I stopped hearing about it, and kind of forgot that it existed. When I saw it come on one of the Sky Cinema channels, I recognised the name and decided to watch it. The incident of an unarmed black man being shot dead by the police causes ripple effects within a neighbourhood in New York - particularly changing the lives of three individuals. The first thing that struck me about the film was the way that the first scene was shot. It's a scene of a man in a car. He is centre frame and the camera doesn't move, he is the complete main focus. Because of this, you're invested in his story before you even know who he is. This is just one of the reasons that you get engrossed in the movie so quickly. The two main characters that you meet first are such interesting, complex characters that you want to know how everything ends for them as soon as you meet them. The film shows a story that has been made be...
