Together | Film Review
When long-time partners Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) move to the countryside, they encounter a mysterious force that seems to be pushing them closer and closer together.
I was looking forward to this one a lot! I'm a big fan of Alison Brie and Dave Franco both individually and together, so I'm always interested to see what they're doing next, and this looked particularly interesting and original.
Unfortunately I didn't like the film as much as I wanted to.
The concept was weird, really weird, and I loved that. But the film itself didn't push this weirdness as far as it could. If you're going into a film with an odd concept, it's really fun when the filmmakers take this to the max and let things get really crazy. That didn't happen here, which was a shame - especially because it would have been really easy to push things further.
The actors have great chemistry, which they always have, and may be helped by them being a couple in real life. But while the actors worked perfectly together, the characters didn't. It was really clear from almost the beginning that they didn't belong together, so it wasn't believable that they would have gone to these lengths to stay together.
And in addition to that, one of the major ideas as we get towards the end of the film is how much these two love each other, and the sacrifices that they make for each other. But again because we are told this rather than shown their love, it didn't quite ring true.
While I love the actors, I didn't love all of the choices they made. I can't quite put my finger on it but there was something about the acting that didn't work for me. I didn't always believe everything they were saying.
The reveal was interesting and really unique, but I don't think it was fleshed out enough. I wanted to really go into the history, to truly understand how this happened and why it started. And while the audience can understand it, it would have been great to have more detail.
There were some really interesting ideas here, particularly as we start to understand more and more about what's actually happening.
This isn't a straightforward horror film, so it'll appeal more to some than others in that sense. I really liked when it leaned into the horror and used scary images and jumps to push things forward - it would have been nice to see a bit more of that.
Ultimately I think the praise that this film gets is because of how unique and interesting the overall idea is, and I completely agree. The way that it uses physicality to illustrate intense ideas about love and loss is really powerful. So while I didn't entirely appreciate the execution of the idea, I do really appreciate the originality and thought behind it.
