Hurry Up Tomorrow | Film Review

An insomniac musician (Abel Tesfaye) meets a mysterious fan (Jenna Ortega) who causes his life to spiral out of control.

I heard that this film was bad - before I watched it I didn't see one good review. And that made me really curious about it. Not only to see if everyone was actually right, but because sometimes it's really fun to watch bad films.

And the reviews were right, because this was not a good film.

The music portions of the film lasted way too long. I know that the movie ties in to an album by The Weeknd, but as someone who doesn't listen to his music, I didn't need those scenes, and they didn't add anything to the film for me.

It's clear that the flashing lights and bright colours are meant to portray the character's disoriented state of mind, but they're actually just distracting. It's unpleasant, and while it gives an insight into his mind, it doesn't make you want to keep watching.

The film never tries to make us care about the characters.

And none of the characters feel like real people. Not one line of dialogue feels authentic, and you don't believe in any of these relationships because there's no chemistry. If you told me the actors had never actually met before and just filmed the whole thing on green screens I'd believe it.

It takes way too long for anything meaningful to happen, and by the time it does, you just don't care anymore.

Considering the film includes some established actors, none of the performances are great.

Overall, this film is a 1hr 40min ad for The Weeknd's music, so if you're not a fan (or even if you are), this probably won't work for you. It certainly didn't for me.

2/10
