Kill Bill: Volume 1 | 100 Movies Bucket List
Next up for the bucket list was Kill Bill (volume 1)!
I was in a bit of a Tarantino mood and watched this after rewatching Pulp Fiction, which I love. I was actually surprised Kill Bill wasn't on last years' list (though I'm really glad Reservoir Dogs was).
Despite having heard of this film, as it's one of the most well-known, popular Tarantino films, I didn't really know what it was about, and I may not have watched it if it wasn't on the list.
The first thing that stuck out to me from the first scene was how good the acting is. All of the supporting cast are great but Uma Thurman really carried this and did an incredible job with it. From her first second on screen you're told so much about this woman, and the more you watch, the more impressive the performance is.
The story is told in such an interesting inventive way, from the non-linear narrative, to the animated section, it keeps you engaged and entertained the whole way through.
As with all Tarantino movies, the writing is amazing. The dialogue in this one isn't as sharp as it is in some of Tarantino's other movies, but it fits really well with the story this is telling, and I love that we hear everything as if The Bride is speaking to us, telling her story as she goes along. If we weren't already on her side, this certainly helped.
The action scenes are also done really well. Tarantino movies are known for being violent and for me, the level of violence worked really well with the story. Nothing felt unnecessary, and a lot of the action scenes gave us vital information about the characters. They were choreographed well and genuinely entertaining to watch.
And then there's the music, which was great. I'm guessing some of the songs used gained more traction and became well-known because of the film, but whatever the case, each song picked fit the scene it was used in really well.
I had a really good time watching this film, better than I thought I would. Volume 2 is definitely on my 'to-watch' list now!
