Kraven the Hunter | Film Review

Kraven's (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) complicated relationship with his father leads to him becoming one of the greatest, most feared hunters in the world.

I heard such bad things about this film before seeing it, the reviews were horrible! So I unintentionally put off watching it for a while. But I'm glad I finally got around to it.

I don't know if it's because of all the negative reviews, but I ended up having a great time. Now, that's not to say this was a great film, but I had a lot of fun watching it.

For a start, I thought the story was really interesting, especially because we got to see a significant portion of Kraven's childhood before we get to present day (though the 'past' section could have been a bit shorter).

At almost an hour in I had no idea where the story was going, but I was enjoying the journey. And this stayed the same the whole way through, I didn't really know what was happening but I had fun with it.

I really loved seeing the way the character moved, it was really unique and clearly a lot of time and effort had been put into the creation of Kraven's unique style.

The cast was great on paper, but while watching the film it definitely felt like a few of the actors were miscast. But I will say that Taylor-Johnson was great in the role and clearly cared about the character.

But the film fell apart for me overall because the story felt messy and incomplete. There were definitely parts that felt like they were setting up for sequels.

The villains were also extremely under-developed, so as interesting as Kraven himself was, he would have been an even better character if he had better adversaries to go up against.

So overall, even though there are major flaws, I had a great time with this film and while it won't be for everyone, it's not nearly as bad as it's made out to be.

5.5/10
