Hot Chocolate Holiday | Blogmas Day 5

It's Blogmas day 5!

Colette (Aubrey Reynolds) runs a café that's home to her secret hot chocolate recipe. But when Marcus (Jonny Swenson) opens a dessert shop with the same hot chocolate recipe, Colette sets out to prove he stole it.

Not only did this one have a somewhat original premise, but it also promised lots of talk of tasty treats, so it was an easy Blogmas pick!

Like a few films I'll be reviewing for Blogmas, this one isn't as good as the premise suggests it could be.

But one great thing about it - it'll really get you in the mood for some Christmassy snacks!

The film focuses on the characters' culinary skills and businesses. So it was about halfway through the film when I realised that that's all we know about them. We never really get to understand who they are as people.

This was the first enemies-to-lovers trope of Blogmas and I want more of the Blogmas movies to do this! Their dynamic when they're enemies is really enjoyable to watch.

But the problem came when the switch happens. When they stop being enemies and start liking each other the chemistry changes. They don't really seem attracted to each other.

My biggest gripe with the film is that the main plot wraps up in the first half, and then for the second half there's not really any plot. And whatever plot there is is really generic.

There was a lot of potential in the supporting characters that never really got used. It would have been interesting to see a bit more of them because they were quite fun to watch.

Considering hot chocolate isn't just a Christmas drink, this film could take place at any time of year. In fact I'm struggling to remember if there were actually any references to Christmas at all.

Overall, if the film had stuck to the premise and kept the couple as enemies for a bit longer, this could have been great. As it stands, it wasn't one of my favourites.
