3 Month Favourites | April - June 2022

It's been a while since my last Favourites post, and I've accumulated quite a few things to mention in the last three months!

Favourite Movie (1): Brittany Runs a Marathon


I didn't expect to like this film as much as I did. I liked the concept, but thought that it would be a bit predictable and not that interesting to watch, so I was really pleasantly surprised. It's about a woman who, in an effort to get healthier and improve her life, decides to run the New York City marathon. Definitely worth a watch!

Favourite Movie (2): Halftime

I'm not a huge documentary fan, but I decided to watch JLO's Halftime documentary, and I was surprised by how much I liked it. I enjoyed seeing a glimpse into her world, and her preparation for the superbowl halftime show. But more than that, I was really into the Oscars the year that JLO was in the conversation of being nominated for her role in Hustlers, so it was really interesting to see those conversations from her point of view.

Favourite Film (3): The Bubble


I reviewed this film HERE, and despite seeing all of the negative reviews before watching it, I loved it, and definitely want to watch it again to see if it holds up.

Favourite TV Show (1): The Mandalorian


It took me a long time to decide to watch this show. At the time I was going through Pedro Pascal's filmography, and when I finished Narcos I needed something else to watch. I like Star Wars, but I'm not a massive fan, so I didn't know if I would like the show, and knew that I would feel obligated to finish it if I started. But I'm so glad that I decided to start it because, from the first episode, I fell completely in love with the story, watched the two seasons (and 'The Book of Boba Fett') as fast as I could, and now I'm anxiously awaiting season 3. Even if you're not really a Star Wars fan, this show is definitely worth watching!

Favourite TV Show (2): Abbott Elementary

I was waiting for this show to come out in the UK for ages, based on the clips that I'd seen on social media, so when it finally did I was so excited to see it. I haven't finished it yet, but so far I am absolutely loving it! Think 'The Office', but set in a school - hilarious.

Favourite TV Show (3): Moon Knight

I was addicted to this show when it was on. I haven't gotten into a lot of the MCU shows, but I took an instant liking to this one. I liked how different it felt, how unique the characters were. And Oscar Isaac was absolutely fantastic in the role(s) that he played. This is definitely up there as one of my favourite Marvel shows!

Favourite Show (4): Heartstopper


I reviewed this show HERE, and I really loved it. It was huge at the time of coming out, so you've probably already heard about it, but if not, it's definitely worth a watch!

Favourite Song (1): Fire Meet Gasoline

The music video for this song was part of my Pedro Pascal 'filmography' tour, but after watching it, I found that I fell in love with the song itself. I've since added it to various Spotify playlists and haven't stopped listening to it.

Favourite Song (2): Tiny Riot

Sam Ryder has been everywhere since Eurovision, and while his Eurovision song has been really popular, this is my favourite of his songs. Worth a listen if you haven't heard it yet!

Favourite Actor: Pedro Pascal

As stated multiple times, I was going through Pedro's filmography during the last three months, and I found so many things to fall in love with, including The Mandalorian, which is my biggest love of the last three months. He's an amazing actor, and I can't wait to see what comes next from him.

While on the run, Eddie Brock and Venom (Tom Hardy) are pursued by a dangerous military organisation. But when aliens from Venom's home world come to Earth, the pair have to make a devastating decision that will change their lives forever. I watched the first Venom movie when it came out years ago, didn't really like it that much, and subsequently didn't watch the second. But totally randomly last week I decided to re-watch the first movie, and ended up liking it enough to also watch the second. And as soon as I finished that, I went to the cinema to see this new one. I really liked this film - it was so much better than I thought it was going to be! My favourite thing about this franchise is the relationship between Eddie and Venom, and for me this film was the best version of the characters together. The Great Dictator | 100 Movies Bucket List

Next up for the bucket list was a film that I hadn't heard of. I'm familiar with Charlie Chaplin, but moreso for his silent films than for anything else, so I didn't really have any idea what this film would be about. And once I did look up the premise, it wasn't one that I was particularly excited to see. I knew that it probably wouldn't be one of my favourites, so it wasn't a surprise that I didn't love it. For a start, as a fan of some of Chaplin's other movies, this movie felt very different, which caught me a bit off guard I appreciated the satire, but it might just be that it isn't as funny for a modern audience, or maybe that it's just not my kind of humour, but a lot of it didn't work for me. It also felt way longer than it needed to be. The runtime itself wasn't a problem as it's just over 2 hours, but a lot of the scenes felt like they could have been shorter. The themes of the film were very ambitious for when it was made.

Seven Samurai | 100 Movies Bucket List

  Next up for the bucket list was another movie I'd never heard of. The premise was an interesting one, but a 2.5 hour samurai movie wasn't something that I was itching to see.  Nevertheless once I started watching it I became really engrossed in the story and characters. For a start, the acting was great. Nothing about the film felt inauthentic, the characters felt like real people and when you're watching it, you're instantly rooting for them. This is also down to the writing and direction. Every aspect of the way the film is made has been done really well. While the film wasn't one of my favourites, there's no doubt about the way it has shaped cinema. It's regarded as one of the most 'remade, reworked, referenced' films in cinema, and the basic premise shows how true that is. Brokeback Mountain | 100 Movies Bucket List

  Next up was one of my most highly anticipated re-watches. I probably watch this film once a year - I love it too much not to watch it, but it's sad enough that I don't need to watch it more than that. I don't remember the first time I saw the film, but I remember the effect it has always had on me. The movie is so powerful, it has so much to say, with messages that could still be applied to the world today. I can't praise either the filmmaking or the performances highly enough. You can tell that the film was made with passion and respect, that everyone involved put everything they had into telling this story in the right way. And that includes the actors. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal were phenomenal in these roles, their chemistry was amazing and I can't imagine anyone else playing these iconic characters. Her | 100 Movies Bucket List

This one was a re-watch that I was really looking forward to seeing again. I first saw it around the time Joker came out and I remember really liking it, so it was one that I saved until later in the bucket list so I could have something to look forward to. But weirdly, my experience of it was completely different on this re-watch. The things about the main character that I found endearing originally put me off this time around. I didn't really like the character at all and I couldn't connect with him. I also didn't find it as profound as I remember finding it the first time. The love story didn't feel as innocent or endearing and I never felt truly invested. I don't know if it's because of how AI-heavy the world is right now, but it just felt really weird. I do like the concept, but I think the characters are where it fell down a bit for me. And that's not to say I hated the film this time. I still think it's a good film that's well-made, it just wa
