I'm Scared Of The Gym!

Hey Guys x

Sorry there wasn't a blog post on Friday, I was at the cinema seeing Split. There will be a review tomorrow so come back and see it!

Today, I'm talking about working out! I never thought this post would come because I never thought I'd be the kind of person who regularly exercises, as bad as that sounds!

But on January 1st I made the New Years resolution to start working out, and I've been good with that so far. I now work out at least 4 times a week using a 'FitnessBlender' workout on YouTube.

However, the one thing I've found out about myself through doing this, is that I'm scared of people seeing me work out.

Even at home. I usually save my workouts til between 11pm and 1am so that everyone is asleep by the time I work out so that they won't see me.

And this extends to the gym. If I don't want people at home to see me, it makes sense that I don't want random strangers in a gym to see me.

The thing is, a gym has just opened up literally a 3 minute walk from me, and I can't go because I'm scared of people seeing me.

But it's not just people seeing me, I'm scared of the gym in general.

I worry about not being able to work the machines, or not working out right because I don't really have any experience.

Honestly, I'm scared of putting myself in a situation where something embarrassing could happen. And I know that this sounds ridiculous, but I can't control the way my brain works, as annoying as this is.

So I've been working out at home, at night, by myself, and I'm somewhat enjoying it. You should definitely check out the 'FitnessBlender' youtube channel because their workouts are really good.

But I just wonder if there's anyone else that's scared of the gym, like I am.

Or anyone who was scared of the gym, but managed to push through it and now goes to the gym on a regular basis.

Either way, if any of these are you, please let me know because I'd be so interested to hear from you!

Thank you for reading.

Comment below your feelings about the gym!

  1. I completely get where you're coming from, I've never been to a gym for all the same reasons. I might start going with friends who go regularly. It might help to feel more comfortable and that way you have someone to ask if you're not sure about something :)

  2. A while ago I wrote a post about body image issues making me feel isolated. At the time I didn't love myself or my body, and I felt self conscious no matter where I was - especially while working out. Your fears are completely rational. But, if working out is something you like to do and something you would like to continue doing, I wouldn't let anything stop you from going to a gym. Gyms have amazing equipment that might benefit you more than an at-home workout (which there is nothing wrong with, but I think it's great to try new things). I say go once and give it a try. People are there for some of the same reasons you are, and at the end of the day it is likely that they will be more than kind to you and will assist you if you need it - there is nothing to be afraid of. Since I wrote that post I have begun to slowly accept myself and it feels great. I hope it goes well for you x

  3. I understand how you feel. I could only ever exercise if my family weren't home and the only time I've ever gone on a run is early in the morning so no one is around. The idea of going to the gym is so scary even though I think it could be quite good. I've actually been looking for a good YouTube workout channel so I'll check out the one you recommended, thanks xx

  4. I completely get your thoughts and feelings because I used to, and I won't lie I sometimes still do, feel that way but I now go to the gym 2-3 times a week and sometimes just getting out of the house can make you feel great. To get over your fears a good idea might be to book an induction at the gym before you start and that way a staff member can run through all the equipment with you so you feel as though you know what you're doing when you do start. Another way is to have a 'selfish' attitude at the gym - and I don't mean be nasty to everyone :p - but focus only on what you're doing and yourself and try not to think about anyone else. The reality is you will probably find that everyone else there is too focussed on themselves and what they are doing to even be thinking about or looking at you. It sounds blunt putting it like that but thinking like that definitely helps me :). Also having a membership at a gym can kind of make you have a sense of belonging which is nice. Gemma xx
