Pretty Lethal | Film Review

When five ballerinas find themselves trapped in a roadside inn with the dangerous inhabitants, they have to use all of their skills to save themselves.

I'd heard mixed things about this film before deciding to watch it. The plot was kind of vague so I wasn't completely sure what to expect.

I really liked this film.

For a start, the cast is great! The film stars Maddie Ziegler, Lana Condor, Avantika, Millicent Simmonds, Iris Apatow and Uma Thurman, and all of the actors do a fantastic job portraying their characters.

It's engaging from the very first moment to the moment the credits roll.

The beginning of the film feels very odd, it's hard to know what to make of it. But once the real plot gets going, you're completely locked in.

The dialogue is probably the thing that lets the film down a bit. It takes a while for the characters to actually sound like real people, even when the acting is great. This is particularly true of the villains, a few of which just felt like caricatures of the typical 'villain'.

The selling point of this film is the unique action scenes. For the most part, I really liked the way these were done, particularly when the characters were all working together. There were probably some that felt a bit unrealistic, but this film isn't the pinnacle of realism as it is, so that didn't matter too much to me.

I didn't expect the film to be gory, but the amount of gore used was perfect to tell the story.

It felt a bit longer than it was, mainly because for the first half of the movie a lot of the scenes seemed to drag on unnecessarily.

And then comes the motivation for all of this. I don't think the main villain needed the big link back to ballet to connect with the girls. I kind of miss films where the villains are just evil for evil's sake, rather than having a tortured backstory.

But then from this, the ending was great, so that's something!

Overall I had a great time with this movie, and it was even better because I didn't expect to like it so much. But I'd definitely recommend it!

7.5/10
