The Drama | Film Review
After a surprise confession causes chaos a week before their wedding, Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson) wonder if they can still make it down the aisle.
I'd heard really mixed things about this movie before seeing it, on polar opposite scales, so while I was looking forward to it, I didn't have exceptionally high hopes.
I liked the film, but all-in-all it felt quite average. There were things about it that I really liked but I didn't love it overall.
But I have to start with the confession that kicks everything off.
For me the whole situation felt a bit weird. Without spoiling anything, the confession was based on something that hadn't actually happened, mixed in with other confessions from people who actually had done things. So while I understand why that might give you slight pause when thinking of marrying someone, it felt like a lot of what happened as a result was a bit dramatic and based on a character's own issues than the confession itself.
The acting was great. Everyone did a great job with their characters, but Pattinson and Zendaya were the complete standouts, as they should be, considering that this is completely their film.
It was a lot funnier than I expected, which I loved. It's so nice when filmmakers aren't scared to mix genres - dramas can be comedic and comedies can be dramatic, and this worked really well here.
The writing was great. And for the most part I thought the pacing worked well too.
There wasn't a lot of suspense. I guess the big question of the movie is whether or not the wedding will go ahead, but that wasn't something I was constantly wondering about.
And then once we got the answer to this question, my interests started to wane. There was a portion maybe 30 minutes from the end where the film got a bit boring, but this did pick up by the time it actually ended.
So overall, I did like the film and I'd probably watch it again, but it wasn't one that I was thinking about once the credits rolled.
6.5/10
