A Nice Indian Boy | Film Review

After months of dating, doctor Naveen (Karan Soni) finally brings his white photographer boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff) home to meet his traditional East Indian family.

From the second I saw the trailer for this film I was really excited to watch it! It seemed like something I would really love.

And thankfully, I did!

I loved the film almost from the second it started. The tone, the dialogue, it immediately opened in a place where I felt both connected to the characters and engaged in their journey from the first time seeing them on screen. And that goes for the supporting characters as well as the main characters.

Soni and Groff have the type of palpable chemistry that you really can't fake. From the second they meet you believe in their relationship and you're truly invested in seeing how they end up.

Plus the actors just worked so well together - they were both absolutely perfect in these roles.

And just a side note on the actors, I loved that they let Jonathan Groff sing!

The film does both romance and comedy so well, it's truly a rom-com, and the filmmakers really lean into both sides of this.

The characters all felt really authentic and real, as well as being fun to watch. It's clear that the filmmakers have experience in this world.

My one and only problem with the film is that, while there were some real, complex conflicts, these were skirted over a bit too quickly for the sake of a happy ending. And I didn't really care too much about this because I wanted the happy ending so much, but in a film like this where the conflicts were actually worth exploring, it would have been nice to have gone a bit deeper into them.

And in keeping with that, there were also a lot of societal issues that were only explored with a light touch, but for a film like this I think it's okay to keep things on the lighter side.

Overall, I really loved this film. It was romantic, funny, there were a lot of beautiful messages and I'd really recommend it to anyone looking to root for an adorable couple.

8/10
