Drop | Film Review

Violet's (Meghann Fahy) enjoyable first date becomes a nightmare when she receives an anonymous message threatening her young son if she doesn't kill her date by the end of the night.

I had really low expectations for this film. Just from the trailer, I could kind of get a sense of the tone and what angle the filmmakers were going for, and I could just tell that it would be silly, but it also had the potential to be quite fun.

While the film was enjoyable, I was right about it being silly.

The plot itself was somewhat interesting, and a good film could have been made out of it. But unfortunately, the final angle the filmmakers decided to go with didn't work.

For a start, it was way too unrealistic. You can kind of get on board in the beginning, but the further it goes, the less things make sense. And by the time we're ramping up towards the ending it's just laughable.

In keeping with this, there were also way too many plot holes. When you understand the motivations of the villain (which weren't particularly good in the first place), nothing makes sense, including why the main character was targeted in the first place. Whatever worked about the film just fell apart.

Nothing of significance happened for the first hour, but it was still an entertaining watch. The variation of characters, getting to know them, and the anticipation of what would happen next was enough to keep you engaged.

I thought the actors did a good job with the material. Unfortunately the writing wasn't great, and as mentioned, the events of the film were unrealistic, but you believed the characters because the actors did well with the material.

The best thing about the film was the cinematography. There were some really interesting shots and movements that kept things interesting. If nothing else, see this for the visuals.

Overall, this was a bit too cheesy for me. It was entertaining throughout, but the story didn't have much depth and didn't make much sense all in all.

5/10
