The Lovebirds (2020 film) - Wikipedia

Hey Guys x

I was looking forward to watching this for so long, mainly because I'm a huge fan of Kumail Nanjiani and his brand of comedy, so I knew that even if the film wasn't that good, I would enjoy him in it. And of course, Issa Rae was a welcome addition.

A couple fresh from a break-up get caught up in a murder mystery that sees them as the perpetrators. Desperate to clear their names, Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) spend the night getting into the most bizarre of situations, as they discover the truth behind the night's mysteries.

I really enjoyed this movie. I knew that I would probably like it, but I ended up loving it, and I'm so glad!

It is funny from literally the first two scenes. Both of the actors are funny in their own right, but putting them together is a stroke of genius. They play off of each other really well and both have such great comedic timing that they would work really well together, whatever the plot of the movie.

Speaking of the plot, it's not your usual murder mystery - it's so interesting and original. And while a large part of this is down to these two characters (who are such endearing, hilarious characters that they make the film as good as it is) this is also down to how the film is written.

Another thing about the plot and the writing is that the story is so coherent and well thought-out that while watching it, you can almost see it in the planning stages. You can see exactly why each scene is where it is, and how each piece of dialogue follows on from the next and moves the story forward.

While so many aspects of the story are unrealistic and could probably never happen in real life, the story is handled in such a realistic way (and their reactions to the unrealistic aspects are so realistic) that it's really easy to suspend your disbelief.

I feel like the word 'funny' can't be used enough to describe this film. There isn't a scene that's not, at least, smile-inducing. But so many of the scenes are laugh-out-loud funny that you feel like you're having a good time while watching it, which is the sign of a great comedy.

And then there's the ending. Now for me, the resolution of this story was the worst thing about it. It wasn't by any means a bad ending, but it was mediocre, compared to a really good beginning and middle. It was let down a bit, but not enough to destroy how good the film was up to this point.

Overall, this is a really good movie that will have you laughing out loud. Rae and Nanjiani make a great comedy duo and really hold the film together. Definitely watch this if you haven't yet!

7.5/10

Lou
