To All The Boys: P.S. I Love you | Film Review
Hey Guys x
This is the sequel to 'To All The Boys I Loved Before', which I reviewed HERE back in 2018. I absolutely loved the first film, so much so that I bought the trilogy of books. So I already knew where this film would go due to reading the book, but I was still really excited to see it!
Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) are a couple, and their relationship is stronger than ever. However, when Lara Jean's last love letter makes it's way back to her, it throws her for a loop. And when the recipient of that letter, John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher), comes back to town, Lara discovers that maybe her relationship with Peter isn't as strong as she thought.
I really enjoyed this movie. I always knew I would.
For a start, it picks up right where the other film left off. It takes absolutely no time to fall back in love with these characters.
One thing that I was really happy about was that this didn't feel like a completely unnecessary sequel. A lot of the time, when a sequel is made, you feel like writers were scrambling for something interesting to create a whole new story out of. And a lot of these sequels feel unnecessary. But for this one, this sequel was a natural progression that made sense, and a second film was warranted.
Normally in a love-triangle movie, one choice is obviously better than the other. But in this movie, you can genuinely see why Lara Jean is having trouble making the decision.
Even though the conflicts throughout the film are quite predictable, you still feel Lara Jean's anxiety, and second-hand embarrassment on her behalf while watching it. The film allows you to imagine yourself in her position. In the same way, while many moments in the film feel like trivial high school problems, that's exactly what they're supposed to feel like.
Lara Jean is such a likeable protagonist that even when she does things she shouldn't, you never really blame or hold it against her. And that's true for most of the characters, I really enjoyed seeing them again this time around.
However, the exception to that was the character of Kitty, played by Anna Cathcart. Kitty was the only character for me that went from one of the best characters in the first film, to one of the worst in the second. A lot of her wit from the first one wasn't really used in this one, and I found that really disappointing.
Overall, this is a really sweet,feel-good movie that makes a great addition to the first one. If you haven't seen either of the movies yet, do a double-feature and watch them both!
6.5/10
