Avatar | 100 Movies Bucket List

This is another re-watch that I wasn't particularly looking forward to seeing again. I saw it around the time it first came out and didn't really like it. I haven't seen it since and haven't really been itching to.

The main thing people talk about when speaking of this film is the visuals, and that's the one thing that can't be disputed, this is a stunning movie. The world of Pandora was created in such a detailed, specific way.

Not only does the world look good, but it feels real. We're seeing mysterious creatures and plants and you don't for a second disbelieve that the characters are going through exactly what we're seeing them go through, which is mostly down to how much work went into creating Pandora.

And with the design of the world, comes the design of the characters and their language. Again, everything feels authentic, and that includes the Na'vi. They're designed in a way that feels completely unique, while also being familiar enough for any audience to feel a connection with them. We care about them from very early on.

But in terms of the actual story, I didn't enjoy it. I didn't care much about the characters (particularly outside of Pandora), so when we look at the overarching message of the story, it just didn't impact me as much as it could have.

I think the acting was great, everyone did a great job, but I never felt connected to the characters. And I really needed to connect with them to truly like the story.

The story also didn't feel that original to me. The visuals are certainly original, but taking them away, the bare bones of this story isn't something you've never watched or will never watch again - Pocahontas probably being the most widely recognised example. What makes it so popular, and feel so new, are the visuals.

I also don't feel like it needed to be almost 3 hours long, but each to their own.

So overall, I thought the visuals were great, the actors were great, but the story itself wasn't. This probably isn't one that I'll watch again unless it shows up on another bucket list, and I probably won't get into the sequels either (unless the next one is nominated for Best Picture!).
