The Love Hypothesis | Film Review
When Olive (Lili Reinhart) accidentally kisses Professor Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman) in an attempt to make her best friend believe that she's dating someone, the pair begin a fake romance that begins to unearth real feelings.
I was really looking forward to this movie. I read the book a few years ago and loved it, so I was hoping that I'd love the movie as much.
And while the movie wasn't as good as the book, I did really enjoy it. I loved the premise of the book, and was really happy to see that it works in movie form.
The cast was great. I tend to really like Lili Reinhart's performances, and I'm a fan of Jaboukie Young-White and was so excited when he was announced as Malcolm.
I loved the introduction to Olive and the fact that the audience could get to know her and some of the other supporting characters before the story even really begins.
In terms of Olive and Adam, it was great to see the way their chemistry developed as the film went on, and for the most part it felt believable.
One gripe that I had, which I have with a lot of media these days, is the characters speaking like they're writing social media posts. It hits the ear wrong, and it'll make the film feel really outdated in a few years' time.
And my other gripe was that the third-act conflicts are crazy, come out of nowhere and some don't make sense. Even the ones in the book somehow don't work in the context of the movie.
That said, it's so much fun and really engaging. Even if you don't totally buy the characters together, it's really fun to see their relationship grow.
There were a lot of issues that were brought up when the film first came out, like scientific accuracy, that I just didn't care about. I was here to have a fun time and that's exactly what I got to have.
So overall, I had a really great time with this movie. Is it the best romance ever made? No. But is it a good adaptation of the book? I think so! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the book.
7.5/10
