Frankenstein (2025) | Film Review
Scientist Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) brings a mysterious creature (Jacob Elordi) to life and is forced to deal with the dangerous consequences.
It took me way too long to finally see this film - but I'm glad I got to watch it and form an opinion before it got Oscar nominations!
I liked this film, though I knew I probably would.
I don't have a huge amount of experience with Frankenstein beyond reading the book and seeing an adaptation or two, but I've always loved the story, so I'm here for all the future adaptations!
The cast is definitely one of the most interesting things about this version. They're all fantastic in their roles.
The visuals were amazing - it's such a beautiful film to watch and was clearly crafted with care and intention.
I liked that it took the time to flesh everything out. We really get to know this world before we even start to get into the main crux of the plot.
Seeing the creation of the creature was interesting, but this is where the film started to drag a little bit for me. We understand what's happening, we're already invested, so elongating the moments before we actually get to see the creature felt unnecessary.
The film did a good job of making Victor morally grey, or in some cases a villain entirely, which is great because for some of the film that's exactly what he is.
That being said, it was great to get to see both sides of the story, to actually get to hear a significant amount from the creature. I loved how much of him we got to see and know. To me, his point of view was a lot more powerful thank Frankenstein's, and it made sense why Elordi was the actor who ended up with a nomination.
The film is really well written, particularly the dialogue.
However, something that was missing for me was the relationship between Frankenstein and the creature. It was great seeing their separate stories but I wanted more of them together. This is a really interesting relationship that would have been great to explore more deeply.
I also didn't care about any of the characters as much as I wanted to.
Overall, I enjoyed this film. I can't say it's my favourite of the Best Picture nominees, but it's a great addition to the Frankenstein world.
7/10
