Hey Guys x

Happy Blogmas day 3!

Today's post comes in the form of a relatively new Netflix movie - and by 'new', I mean that it's been out for less than a month. Either way, it was the first Christmas film I watched this month and it really got me in the holiday spirit.

It's about a group of high school students who are forced to spend the holidays in their small town when a snowstorm hits.

I didn't think of this film as anything other than a standard Christmas movie, so I didn't love it or hate it. However, I did enjoy some things about it more than just the plot in and of itself (which wasn't that memorable).

The film tries to be original in the sense that it is focusing on snow rather than the entire concept of Christmas, but this doesn't stop it from being a run-of-the-mill Christmas film.

Because this is an ensemble, there is more than one love story to be told here. The thing is, every love story is completely obvious, and you see all of them coming a mile off. This doesn't exactly take anything away from the film because it's not like you're watching it as a mystery. So while the individual stories were cute, they were also extremely predictable.

The romance between Stuart (Shameik Moore) and Julie (Isabela Merced) is probably the most cliche, but it's also the best romance in the film. They're the couple you root for, because they're the only two that the audience learns anything about for a long time. Because of this, they quickly become the main characters and the ones that you relate the most to.

Having said that, even with these two characters, all of the characters are a bit bland. Even the ones that you like, you don't care that much about because none of them really has a significant personality. Even though they're all inherently likeable, they don't do enough to actually be liked.

I found the music throughout the movie to be a bit jarring. It felt like whoever made this just stuck any song with the word 'Christmas' in it to any scene, not bothering to work out if the music and the scenes actually fit together - which most of them didn't.

However, the best thing about the film were the individual declarations of love. Coming from both the couples and the friends, they were all beautifully written, and all held a lot of power. They made the film a lot better than it would have been otherwise.

Overall, watch this to get yourself in the Christmas spirit, but don't expect it to become one of your favourite Christmas movies.

4/10 - Originality
5/10 - Christmas Spirit
2.5/10 - Christmas Music

It's 22 days until Christmas!

Come back tomorrow for Blogmas day 4!
