Underrated Movies to Watch This Halloween!
Hey Guys x
As a huge fan of horror, I really love whenever Halloween comes around, particularly because some of my favourite movies play on TV 24/7.
So I thought that I would compile a list of some of the best underrated horror movies that I've watched this month, just in time for Halloween today!
Coraline
This has become a really classic Halloween movie, particularly for people that aren't really that into horror. And it's in this list as 'underrated' for anyone that doesn't believe cartoons can also be horror movies, because this is one! It's about a girl called Coraline who finds a secret door in her house that leads to an alternate world - with alternate parents. It's the perfect movie to watch if you want a bit of a scare tonight without being truly freaked out.
Monster House
This is probably my favourite cartoon horror, for so many reasons. It's about a group of kids who truly believe that the house next door is alive, and they're not exactly wrong. It's creative, genuinely scary, and I only found out this week that it was made with motion capture, rather than being a total animation, which is amazing! Plus, it's on Netflix, so what are you waiting for?
Annabelle
And just like that, we've gone straight into horror horror - though I deliberately picked the least scary of the Annabelle trilogy (in actuality, the third movie, 'Annabelle Comes Home', is probably less scary than this one, but it's also less good). It's about a couple who come across the Annabelle doll around the same time that they are attacked by a couple from a cult. It's scary enough to give you a genuine fright, but not so scary that you won't be able to sleep tonight.
Scream
And back to another classic that doesn't get as much love as it should. For the Scream movies, I'd personally go for either 1, 2 or 4 as those are the best ones, and they all have the same amount of scare in them, which is virtually none. These are really fun Halloween-y movies without being actually scary. Unless, of course, you're scared of slasher movies and/or a very recognisable mask.
Clown
I'm watching this movie as I write this (it's on Netflix) and I really do feel like it's a great film for Halloween. It's about a father that puts on a clown costume for his son's birthday party, and then finds that he can't take it off... or lose the personality that comes with it. Like some of the others on this list, it's scary enough to be great for Halloween while you're watching it, but definitely isn't scary enough to keep you up at night - the perfect combination.
The Wicker Man
(Specifically the 1973 original version)
This is a movie that I think is really underrated, because no one ever talks about it or includes it in these kinds of lists, but I saw it for the first time recently and definitely think it's worth a mention. It's about a police sergeant who arrives on a small island in Scotland in search of a missing girl, but on this island, all isn't as it seems. I didn't expect it to be as good as it was, and it's definitely a horror/thriller without being 'scary', which makes it perfect if you're not interested in being scared.
Unfriended: Dark Web
Of the two 'Unfriended' movies, this is definitely the better one. It all takes place online and is about a boy and his group of friends who suddenly find themselves targets of something dangerous. It's the kind of film that you get really invested in while you're watching it, but you'll find that you're not actually scared. Intrigued, definitely, but it's just a good movie that fits into the horror category without actually being horrifying.
Lights Out
This is one of my favourite horror movies. It's about a girl and her little brother who are plagued by the horror of their mother's childhood best friend. The reason that I like it so much is that it took one small idea from a short film and expanded on it in such a great way. It's scary, and a great one to watch all year round, not just on Halloween.
I Know What You Did Last Summer
I have such a soft spot for 90s horror movies, especially slasher movies like this. One year after four friends accidentally kill a man, they are harassed by a hidden killer who claims to know all about their sordid past. It's as fun as a film like this could be because you don't take it too seriously, but there are still entertaining jump scares and the promise of an entertaining, if slightly cheesy, sequel.
The Perfection
Now I don't know if I would necessarily class this as a horror film, but it's definitely a thriller, and it's definitely worth watching if you haven't had the chance. It's about a music prodigy who returns to her old school and befriends the new star pupil. I can't give a better description than that because in all honesty it's so much better without one. Even if it isn't Halloween, this is one that you should definitely watch because it's so well made and will have you on the edge of your seat literally until the credits roll.
Halloween
Obviously these aren't underrated Halloween movies, but I couldn't do this list without bringing these in. For me, the best way to watch them is to either watch the 2009 remake only, or to watch the original movie and skip straight to the 2018 sequel (pictured above). But I've seen almost all of these movies (yes, even H20) and they're all great movies to watch at this time of year, even if some are much better than others.
And that concludes my list. What movies are you watching this Halloween?
