A Gift For Christmas | Blogmas Day 5
Hey Guys x
Happy Blogmas day 5!
As you can see, the original name for this film is 'A Gift to Remember', but when I watched it on the Sky Christmas channel, it was called 'A Gift For Christmas', so that's what I'm going with.
Darcy (Ali Liebert) works in a bookstore and is always hoping to get swept off her feet. However, she doesn't expect to sweep someone off their feet - which is exactly what happens when she crashes her bike into a man (Peter Porte), leaving him with a serious case of amnesia. But as she tries to help him piece his life together, will Darcy find herself falling for someone who doesn't even know who he really is?
I didn't have high hopes for this film before going into it, but I actually really enjoyed it, in all of its cliche predictable-ness.
The bookstore setting isn't that unusual in romance movies, and I've seen it used quite a few times in Christmas movies. So even though this might be seen as predictable, I love it. Bookstores in movies always seem to have a magical feel to them, and this is only intensified when it's Christmas.
The events of the film play out in a really dramatic, unrealistic way (for example, he doesn't even hit his head hard enough to be unconscious, yet immediately slips into a coma...), but even if the situation in itself is unrealistic, the premise of the movie is actually not the most cliche for a Christmas movie.
In my opinion, the best thing about the movie was everything that was happening in the store. As nice as it was to see the couple spend time together, their romance wasn't the strongest thing in the film. The Christmas Eve competition that the store was having with a rival store could have been a really strong story-line on it's own and given us a break from the usual romance plot - but instead that interesting story-line was pushed aside for a romance that was, at best, just okay.
One thing that particularly annoyed me about the film was that, if they hadn't kept talking about Christmas, we wouldn't have known what time of year it was. And that's because, while there's snow on the ground, every person who wasn't in the main cast (aka the people in the background walking down the street) were dressed like it was a sunny day in early autumn - someone even had on short sleeves! It made no sense and really took me out of the movie.
However, there was a good twist in it, and the ending was really cute, even if it was extremely predictable. You got to like these characters even though you don't feel particularly strongly about them one way or the other.
Overall, not the best Christmas movie you'll ever see, but definitely not the worst, which is something!
6/10 - Originality
5/10 - Christmas Spirit
3/10 - Christmas Music
It's 20 days until Christmas!
Come back tomorrow for Blogmas day 6!
