June Favourites | 2018

Hey Guys x I don't know why, but it feels like it's been ages since I've done a Favourites post! Either way, I have a lot of stuff to talk about this month, so I'm just gonna get started. Favourite Movie (1): Blockers I've written a review on this that I'm gonna put up in the next few days, probably sometime next week, so I won't talk about it too much here, but I loved this movie. It was funny, touching, and I think more people should be talking about it. Favourite Movie (2): Dear John I saw this for the first time so long ago, around the same time that I saw 'The Notebook'. And let me be honest, I didn't enjoy it that much - in fact, at that point I didn't understand the fuss about Nicholas Sparks, because the only two movies that I'd seen of his I didn't enjoy. But as you'll see later in the post, I'm in a bit of a Channing Tatum phase at the moment, and I have the DVD, so I decided to give this movie another sh

Tomb Raider | Film Review

Hey Guys x I can't even remember when I saw this, but I'm finally reviewing it! It's about a woman called Lara Croft, who is the daughter of a man who disappeared years ago. While everyone believes that he is dead, Lara refuses to admit that her father is gone. Hoping to find him herself, Lara goes to his last known location, hoping to find proof of life. However, his last-known location just happens to be a tomb off the coast of Japan. Lara must use everything that her father has ever taught her to decipher her way through the tomb and find out the truth about her father's disappearance. I still don't know how I feel about this film. I don't know how much it's based on either the video game, or on Angelina Jolie's version because I haven't seen either of them - this film was my first experience of this whole world. I have to preface this by saying that Alicia Vikander was amazing in the role. I think she's pretty much amazing in everyt

Book Review #54: The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Image
Hey Guys x It's been just under a month since my last book review (probably longer by the time I finally upload this!), and in that time I've fallen in love with reading over and over and over again, and this book has certainly helped with that. It's about a girl called Starr Carter. Starr lives in two worlds, the 'ghetto' where she lives and has been brought up, and the 'white' area where she goes to school, and where all her friends, and her boyfriend, are. Her life's work is making sure that there two areas never collide. However, one night Starr witnesses the murder of her unarmed best friend by a police officer. And suddenly Starr is thrust into a world of riots and activism. But when her worlds collide, and it's time to speak out, will Starr be able to find her voice? I thought this book was incredible. There's a lot of hype surrounding it and it certainly deserves every bit of hype that it's getting because it's worth it.

In Darkness | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I heard about this movie ages ago, and made a mental note to watch it when it came out. Then I forgot about it, saw the description and thought it sounded really interesting, before remembering that it was the film that I'd wanted to see ages ago. Safe to say I'm really interested in the premise of this film! It's about a woman called Sofia, who is a blind pianist. One day, she hears a struggle in the apartment above hers, and later in the night finds out that her neighbour Veronique has seemingly committed suicide. Sofia's friendship with her neighbour leads her to meet Veronique's father. This meeting sees Sofia fall into a world of secrets, danger and criminality. But as we learn more about Sofia's dark past, it becomes clear that this world of danger is one that she knows all too well. I found this film extremely interesting, a thrilling watch. Having a blind pianist is an interesting dynamic anyway, but when that is paired with this cri

Hereditary | Film Review

Hey Guys x I saw this yesterday and decided to just review it straight away - especially given that it falls within my favourite genre of film: horror. It's about a woman whose mother passes away. After her mother's funeral, she begins to find out terrifying things about her family history. The more she discovers, the more she puts her family at risk, until it seems like they can't escape these problems. After all, they didn't stumble upon them, they inherited them. I have mixed feelings about this film. On the one hand, when you see it in its entirety, I really like the idea. The fact that the family are being 'haunted' by something that has been in their family for generations is really interesting and clever. Especially as you get more into the story and see the ways that the family are being tormented. On the other hand, the film itself wasn't what I thought it would be. For a start, it was incredibly slow. Considering that these events seem

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I went to see this at the weekend, pretty much based on how much I loved the first one. I remember the excitement that I felt in the cinema during the first one, and I really wanted it to be replicated during the sequel. It takes place three years after the Jurassic World theme park from the first film has been destroyed. The park lay on a dormant volcano. However, Owen Grady and Claire Dearing are brought back to the area when it is discovered that this volcano is not only active, but about to erupt. However, gettng the dinosaurs to safety isn't easy - especially when they discover sinister plans. Plans that involve the creation of new dinosaurs - plans that threaten the whole planet. I really enjoyed this film. In terms of the plot, it is made clear that there is a lot at stake, both for the dinosaurs and the people who care about them. This is particularly important because there had to be a really good reason for this story to make its way back around when

Focus On... Kimmy Schmidt!

Image
Hey Guys x So, because I watch a lot of TV and movies, I've decided that I want to write blog post about some of my favourite characters from movies and TV shows, where I can just gush about how much I love them - and first up is Kimmy Schmidt. Character: Kimmy Schmidt TV Show: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Portrayed by: Ellie Kemper Last year, I binged the first three seasons of this show back to back, and I was surprised by how much I loved it. The show is about a girl who, along with three other girls, was kidnapped and held hostage in an underground bunker for 15 years. When they are eventually rescued, Kimmy has to find a way to assimilate into the world again, with the help of her roommate Titus, her landlady Lillian and her boss Jacqueline. The reason that I chose to focus on Kimmy in this post is not because she's my favourite character on the show, because she's not, that spot is reserved for Titus. But Kimmy is a particularly amazing character. As

Love, Simon | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x You've definitely heard people talking about this film, mostly to say positive things. I waited until the hype had seriously died down before I saw it, so that other people's opinions wouldn't cloud my judgement of the film. It's about a boy called Simon who has a secret - he's gay. And he's firmly in the closet. When a classmate comes out anonymously, he emails back, just to let the classmate know that he isn't alone in being in the closet. But when those emails keep flying back and forth between the two, and Simon realises that he has fallen for this anonymous classmate, he finally feels like he has found a place in the world. However, when his emails are discovered and he is blackmailed by a fellow classmate, Simon has to make a choice - will he ruin his friendships by keeping up with the blackmailer's unrealistic demands, or will he allow himself to be forced to make the biggest decision of his life? I LOVED this movie. Seriously,

Breaking In | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I saw this on bank holiday Monday, and I have to admit that I didn't have particularly high hopes for it. Not because I thought it would be bad, but I thought that the lack of promotion that I saw for it (maybe 2 TV adverts over the whole promo run) suggested the quality of the film - so I definitely went in with low expectations. It's about a woman called Shaun Russell who, along with her son and daughter, goes to stay for the weekend in her late father's vacation home, a home that she spent time in as a child. However, on their first night in the technologically advanced home, four men break in, looking for a hidden safe with 4 million dollars inside. With Shaun on the outside and her kids on the inside with these assailants, she has to figure out a way to break in - before she loses everything that matters to her. As I said, I didn't expect to like this film, so it was a pleasant surprise to see that it was actually a really interesting film, with
