A Wish For Christmas | Blogmas Day 10

Hey Guys x

It's Blogmas day 10!

Of most of the movies I've watched for Blogmas, this film seemed the most like a cliche Christmas movie, and I was totally prepared for that.

Sara (Lacey Chabert) is meek and timid at work, until her boss steals her big Christmas-based proposal. She makes a Christmas wish for courage and suddenly finds herself speaking up when she never would have before. But will her newfound confidence help her to open her mind (and her heart) to love?

Yes, it is as cliche as it sounds, and yes, it's also as bad as it sounds. Not that I expected this film to be a cinematic masterpiece, but I expected to at least get some enjoyment out of it, rather than just finding criticisms, which is what happened.

For a start, the film doesn't really understand what 'courage' is. The film sets it up that Sara's wish gives her courage, but this 'wish' really acts more like a mix of truth serum, assertiveness and guilt tripping. None of these are what courage is, and they all make her a worse character. Fair enough she was assertive and got things done, but there were other points in the film where she just said mean things for the sake of being 'courageous', and it didn't make any sense.
The film also made it seem like she had no filter. She couldn't hold back the words that came into her head, whether they were horrible or not. And again, this isn't what courage means.

Some of the things in the movie just made no sense. How would someone go on a work trip and end up spending Christmas (or the period leading up to Christmas) with their boss's family?

The character of Sara doesn't seem more confident at the end of the film than she does at the beginning. Again, she's more assertive, but she doesn't actually seem to have more confidence or courage.

And then we come to the fact that I've barely mentioned any other characters in this movie, including the love interest. This is because the film doesn't make use of its secondary characters at all - they may as well not be there. And this includes the love interest, who does nothing for the story.

Overall, it could have been a lot worse, but it also could have been a lot better. But if you're looking for a really nice Christmas movie to watch in the coming weeks... choose something else.

5/10 - Originality
5/10 - Christmas Spirit
6/10 - Christmas Music

It's 15 days until Christmas!

Come back tomorrow for Blogmas day 11!
