3 Month Favourites! | April - June 2020

Image
Hey Guys x So as I mentioned in my last Favourites post, I'm going to be doing these less frequently so that I have more to say - and I definitely have a lot to say this month! Favourite Movie (1): Rocketman So I was extremely late and only saw this for the first time at the beginning of May. I've since watched it about twice a week every week since first seeing it. I had no idea that I would love it as much as I did, but something about it just really stuck with me. I don't know if it was the soundtrack (which I'll talk about later) or the actors (who I'll talk about later), but I completely fell in love with everything about it and I can't imagine myself getting tired of re-watching it anytime soon! Favourite Movie (2): When We First Met This one is on the list purely because of how much it surprised me. It's about a man who meets a girl, doesn't end up with her, and then gets to re-do their first meeting again and again to try and make her fall in lov

Book Review #77: Out of Love by Hazel Hayes

Image
Hey Guys x I am such a huge fan of Hazel Hayes - she inspires the woman in me, the writer in me and the film fanatic (and potential filmmaker) in me, and I was so excited to get her book. I was counting down the days until it arrived! This love story in reverse pulls us into the world of our protagonist, who begins the book by watching her boyfriend pack and move out of the home they once happily shared together. As we read, we delve further and further into this couple's past, not only seeing what made them break up, but also seeing what made them fall in love. Okay, so I have complex feelings about this book. I love the concept, and so many other things that I'll explore in more detail, but because of the way it was written (and a few other issues), I can't say that I loved it. I definitely liked it, though. I'll start with the things that I liked about the book. Hayes is a writer. This may be her debut novel, but this is not her first story, and that is so clear in t

The House That Jack Built | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I remember a commotion being made over this film when it first came out - I think people walked out of the screening at the Cannes premiere because it was so disturbing. So of course, that made me excited to watch it. Thankfully it was (and is) on Amazon Prime Video, so I could watch it easily. Jack (Matt Dillon) is a failed architect who tells the audience the story of five murders that he committed, comparing each one to a work of art. I wasn't sure what to make of this film after first watching it, but after sitting on it for a day or so, I think I liked it more than I thought I did at the time. The first thing that struck me about this film was the unique way that it compares the horrific act of murder to the beauty of art and/or architecture. It does this so early on that it sets up what the film will become. The moments of voice over which are so infused within the film are very original, but they also break you away from the main story rather than pushi

Book Review #76: Good Girl, Bad Blood by Holly Jackson

Image
Hey Guys x Last year I read and reviewed the first book, 'A Good Girl's Guide to Murder', and you can read my review HERE . When I found out that the first book was getting a sequel, I was really excited. Pip is a character that I completely loved reading about, as well as her partner-in-crime Ravi. So I pre-ordered the book and read it as soon as I received it. Pip is back with a hit true-crime podcast detailing how she solved the murders of Andie Bell and Sal Singh. But when someone she knows goes missing, and she's asked to use her podcast to spread the word, Pip is reluctant to jump back into that dangerous world. But when the clues start to lead to something deadly, and the police refuse to help, will Pip be able to resist investigating? I really enjoyed this book. For a start, I like the way that Jackson writes, the way she tells a story. With a story like this, there are so many clues, red herrings and moving parts that it has to be written in a reall

Beautiful Boy | Film Review

Hey Guys x I was supposed to watch and review this film so long ago that it's embarrassing. I kept planning to watch it, but then something else always took precedence. And then I think that, because I assumed that the film would be really emotional, I wanted to mentally prepare for it - and apparently that took about a year to do! Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) has a whole life in front of him when he becomes addicted to meth. An addiction that quickly spirals out of control and leads Nic into the repetitive cycle of rehab, recovery and relapse. David Sheff (Steve Carell) does everything he can to bring his son back from the edge, but David soon realises that if he wants to save Nic, he has to let Nic save himself. I thought this was a great movie. By the way it's filmed, from the first moments on screen you know that what's coming is about to break your heart, and it absolutely does. There's so much power in the way the story is being told - we get to know s

The Half of It | Film Review

Image
Hey Guys x I briefly heard about this film before it came out, but I didn't research it or watch the trailer or anything, so I kind of went in blind. But I do remember being excited to see what all the fuss was about - the reviews have been great! Ellie Chu (Leah Lewis) is a straight-A student who spends her free time writing essays for other students. But her tasks change when jock Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer) asks her to write a letter to the girl he loves, Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). But as Ellie begins writing the letters, she discovers that Paul isn't the only person in love with Aster. I don't know what it is about this film, but it just didn't grip me the way I wanted it to. I liked it, but I didn't love it. For a start, it follows the generic formula of usual Y/A Netflix movies that we have come to love, but with an LGBT twist. However, this film isn't about Ellie figuring out her sexuality, but rather about her relationships with Paul and As

Black Lives Matter // Donations and Petitions

Hey Guys x I haven't posted in a little while, and have instead spent my time researching, retweeting useful information and signing petitions in support of BLM and the people who have suffered as a result of police brutality. But while this has been going on mainly on twitter, I also wanted to put something on the blog, rather than going straight back to regular posts like everything was suddenly okay again. So find below some links to help, petitions to sign and places to donate to: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ https://twitter.com/versacetaehyung/status/1268256815420190724  - More petitions to sign (each takes about two minutes and is really easy to do) https://twitter.com/BIZZLESBLESSING/status/1267244209393807361  - More petitions https://twitter.com/KRISTINSANGRY/status/1267925459955617792  - Videos to watch if you can't donate (proceeds from un-skipped ads are donated, all you have to do is watch) https://twitter.com/ohmy00ngs/status/1268514857764126720  - List of
