Coming Home For Christmas | Blogmas Day 7
Hey Guys x
Happy Blogmas Day 7!
We're a week into December and that feels really weird to say. It feels like December 2018 only just finished!
Today's movie is about Lizzie Richfield (Danica McKellar), a house manager who is preparing a lavish mansion for sale, while dealing with the family members that still live there. But soon two brothers tear Lizzie's heart in completely different directions. Can she prepare the house and bring this fragmented family back together before Christmas?
This isn't going to be a particularly long review, because even from the description it's clear that this film isn't a cinematic masterpiece... or even that good a Christmas film.
For a start, it didn't need to take place at Christmas. It could take place at any time of year and work, practically nothing would have to be changed.
However, the makers of the film definitely wanted you to know that it was Christmas, given the fact that the phrases 'came/come/bring him home for Christmas' were used so many times in the film that it felt ridiculous, particularly because none of these uses ever felt natural.
Speaking of unnatural, some of the performances felt really over the top. It kind of felt like everyone in the film was putting on a pantomime - being the most extreme examples of themselves that they could possibly be, and it just came off as cringey.
Although Lizzie has chemistry with both of the brothers, neither of them is a particularly interesting character. And in addition to that, their personalities are both sides of an extreme that doesn't fit with Lizzie's character at all. In real life, neither of these couples would work.
The thing about this film is that, you could turn it on at any point, or turn it off at any point, and still know everything that has happened and/or will happen, which is the problem when you stick so many cliches into one place - it becomes boring. And this certainly was.
Overall, there are better Christmas movies to watch this year... there's even better Christmas movies that star Danica McKellar!
4/10 - Originality
2/10 - Christmas Spirit
4/10 - Christmas Music
It's 18 days until Christmas!
Come back tomorrow for Blogmas day 8!
