Crush (2022) | Film Review

Image
I didn't know much about this film before it came out, but I had heard really good things, so I was excited to see what I thought of it. When Paige (Rowan Blanchard) is forced to join her school's track team, she takes the opportunity to pursue the girl that she has always had a crush on (Isabella Ferreria), but slowly ends up falling for someone else on the team. I loved this film.  The characters were perfect. As well as Paige and her first love interest Gabriela, we also have AJ (Auli'i Cravalho), Dillon (Tyler Alvarez), Stacey (Teala Dunn) and Paige's mother Angie (Megan Mullally). All of the characters were interesting, well-written and really helped to tell the story. In fact, the characters completely carried the film - they were better written than the actual dialogue of the film. And with the characters comes the actors, who were all amazing in the roles they were playing. The story itself is interesting and allows the relationships between the characters to

Heartstopper (S1) | TV Show Review

Image
Like so many other people, I started watching this Netflix show, fell in love with the characters, and binged it. So I thought I might as well review it. When Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) strike up an unlikely friendship, they soon find that they might be more than friends. I loved this show. Instantly. I haven't read the books that it's based on, but now I really want to! First of all, all of the characters, and the actors that portray them, are absolutely perfect. In addition to Charlie and Nick, the other characters include Tao (William Gao), Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), Isaac (Tobie Donovan) and Nick's mother Sarah, who is played by none other than Olivia Colman. Not only are all of the cast perfect for their characters, but all of the characters are perfect for the show. I would watch a show that focused on any of them and still love it. I also loved the subject matter of the show. We need more sweet, lovely LGBT+ sho

Stillwater | Film Review

This film wasn't really on my radar until it came out on the Sky Premiere channel, but the premise sounded intriguing so I decided to watch it. Bill Baker (Matt Damon) travels to France to see his daughter, Allison (Abigail Breslin) who has been imprisoned for murder. As Allison continues to protest her innocence, Bill investigates the case to find out the truth. I actually liked this film a lot more than I thought I would. As I said, I found the premise really intriguing. Even before putting the film on, I was interested in whether Allison committed the murder, and how Bill would try to solve the case. I really liked the characters, which again I didn't really expect. Because while the plot drives everything forward, the characters are what make the film interesting. Even though you don't really get a lot of time or space to know the characters, you are invested in their story. The film is built on the relationships of these people, and the chemistry (platonic and otherwis

All The Old Knives | Film Review

I'm a huge Chris Pine fan, so this film had been on my radar for a while. And while I was looking forward to seeing it, I knew that it possibly wouldn't be something I'd love depending on whether it focused on the spy story or the love story. When the CIA discovers a mole within the organisation, Henry Pelham (Chris Pine) is forced to reunite with his former colleague and lover, Celia Harrison (Thandiwe Newton) to discover the truth. I didn't love the film for various reasons, most of which I'd been expecting. For a start, the film begins at a running pace. It took literally 3 minutes for the entirety of the story to be explained to the audience. There was absolutely no time to sit with these characters, get to know them, or actually like them. The film never really did anything to make the audience care about either the incident (a plane hijacking) or the mole. A lot of this movie rests on the chemistry of its main characters, and for me the characters (or perhap

Book Review #102: Seven Days in June by Tia Williams

Image
Next up on the reading list was 'Seven Days in June'. It's been a busy few weeks, so it took me a little while to get through this, but I'm really glad I've read it. Eva Mercy is a bestselling erotica writer, Shane Hall is an award-winning novelist. When they meet, their chemistry is obvious to everyone in the literary community. But no one knows that 15 years ago, Eva and Shane spent seven days madly engaged in a love that changed them forever, and they have been writing to each other in their books for years. But as they reconnect, can seven days erase the last 15 years of pain and heartbreak? I really enjoyed this book. For a start, I loved the prologue. Normally I tend to skim prologues, but this one was great. We got to know Eva's character, and it was a nice introduction to the story. Eva is such an interesting character. I loved being in her head, and I loved her voice. But what I really found interesting was the way that her chronic health issues are spo

Free Guy | Film Review

I had heard a lot about this film when it initially came out last year - mostly good things. It never really appealed to me, though, partly because I didn't really understand the premise, and also because it didn't seem like my kind of thing. But it had always been on my 'to-watch' list, and I finally got around to it. When a bank teller discovers that his world is a video game, and he is a background character within that game, he decides to become the hero of his own story. I absolutely loved this film! I had quite low expectations, so I was surprised by how much I loved it. Once I understood the concept, I loved it. I'm not a huge gamer, but I do enjoy playing video games, and I wish more movies were made that explored video games in this way. There are multiple references to pop culture sprinkled throughout the film,  and not only are these well-placed, but they do a good job of explaining the world of the film and moving the story forward, rather than just be

March Post Round-Up | 2022

April was such a busy month that I'm currently writing my March round-up post in May - hopefully I can get the April one up before June! Book Review #100: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart  - I started March with my 100th book review, and unfortunately I didn't really like the book. Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard | Film Review  - My first film review of the month was this film, which I loved the original of. Unfortunately, the sequel felt unnecessary. Book of Love | Film Review  - Next up is a review of a really cute film that I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I Want You Back | Film Review  - I liked the premise of this film but ended up being disappointed with its execution. Scream (2022) | Film Review  - I had high hopes for this one, but ended up being a bit disappointed. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) | Film Review  - Another unfortunate disappointment, particularly because I love the Texas Chainsaw series. Vacation Friends | Film Review  - I watched this on a whim and i
