My Introduction To DC Movies!

Hey Guys x

So, if you've been reading my posts for a bit, you'll know that I'm a huge Marvel fan. Until recently, the extent of my superhero knowledge came from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I decided to change that.

Now, I have never had anything against DC, I've just not watched any of the movies. They never appealed to me when I was younger, and when I started getting into the Superhero thing, I started with the Avengers and made my way their the Marvel universe and fell in love with it.

But, with Wonder Woman coming out this year, I decided that it was time to take the plunge and fall into the world of DC.

I started with the most recent movies and will eventually make my way back to the Batman trilogy.

So yesterday I watched Batman vs Superman and today I watched Suicide Squad. The rest of this post is going to be mini reviews of both these films, so I hope you enjoy reading my thoughts on these movies!

I also have to say that these films were my first introduction to Batman, the Joker, Wonder Woman and all of the villains ever. I watch Smallville so I know Superman etc. well but the rest I don't, so I'm basing my reviews off of the films and them alone.

Batman VS Superman: Dawn of Justice
I didn't know what to expect when I started watching this film. I've seen no Batman or Superman movies before, I'd barely seen the trailer and so I had no idea what the film was even about. And to be honest, I might have to watch it again because there are still parts that I'm not clear on.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie. I liked both Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck's portrayal's of their respective characters, I loved the introduction of Wonder Woman, and it definitely made me excited to eventually watch the Justice League.

However, as I said before, there were some things that I didn't understand, mainly why the heroes were fighting in the first place, what was their motivation? I don't understand if they were supposed to be good vs evil because I don't know what they were fighting for throughout the film. This became clearer nearer the end, but that was for a specific thing that Lex Luthor did.

Speaking of Lex Luthor, I don't know how I felt about him. I feel like, because I watch Smallville, my favourite portrayal of Lex will always be Michael Rosenbaum, because in my eyes, he totally embodied the character. Jesse Eisenberg was great (this is, I think, the first film that I've ever seen him in, so I had no idea how he was going to play it), but I didn't really get a feel for why Lex was this villain, what did he have against the heroes? Or anti-heroes. Is Batman a hero?

Maybe all of this is because I haven't seen previous movies, but I never really got a feel for any of the characters. I still don't know why they do what they do. And I know that this movie wasn't an origin story, and I'm glad that it wasn't (I've had enough origin stories to last a lifetime!). I guess I just wanted a bit more of them out of their suits, particularly Batman.

Having said all this, I think a lot of the negativity towards the film was a bit unfair. I think, when films like this come out, people look at them as a 'superhero movie', as well as being part of their cinematic universes. But because my mind has been conditioned to see Marvel and superhero and everything else as something else, I wasn't watching this as a superhero movie, and I think that really helped. I wasn't holding it to any expectations and as a result, was able to enjoy it.

I would definitely recommend it if you're into that kind of thing. But it's way too dark to be light-hearted and fun!

Suicide Squad
Now, out of these two films, this was my favourite by a clear mile! Again, I didn't really know what to expect, and this definitely worked in my favour!

Let me get the negatives out of the way. Jack Howard mentioned in a video that there weren't really scenes in the film., just moments edited together, some without context, and I do have to agree to an extent. When I was watching it, I didn't really notice this, but when it finished I didn't really have a clear answer for what the film is about. These Villians are being recruited to protect the world in case someone like Superman decides that he isn't a fan of the human race. But that never happened. I mean, yeah there was a villain that they had to face, but the bigger picture that was explained in the beginning was forgotten about by then end, and it made no sense to me.

However, onto the good. I loved all of the characters. They were all so unique, I got a sense of their powers and most of their motivations, their personalities came across clearly, and I really enjoyed the at that they worked together.

I kind of felt like this was a film about a lot of different things at the same time, but because I really liked the characters, it worked. All of the characters tried to have equal airtime, it wasn't about any one in particular, and I liked that, because there wasn't one character that I cared about more than the others anyway.

Harley Quinn in particular was so great! She was crazy in all the best ways, and I really want to see her in another movie. In addition, I like the way that they were a team, purely because they are used to being on the side of the bad guys, and they really did operate like a team.

The only other thing I will say which I wasn't a fan of (and this isn't a fault of anyone other than my own preferences) was that I would like to see a film from the Villian's point of view where they are actually being villians. In Suicide Squad, the point is that they are recruited by the good guys, and work for the good guys. I want to see villians that are just bad, but to see the whole film from the point of view of the bad villain.

And also, I don't know how I feel about the Joker yet, which is why I never mentioned him. I don't feel like the film helped me to understand who he is at all.

Thank you for reading!

Comment below how you felt about these movies!

  1. Love your reviews! I'm not surprised you weren't that clear on what was going on in Batman vs Superman because there was literally barely any plot haha, I definitely wasn't a fan of the film! But I think the Dark Knight trilogy is great and you will really enjoy it! xx

  2. Nice, short reviews. I would love to see Batman V Superman, been watching cut scenes from the game (Justice League 2 I guess). Suicide Sqaud IS MY THING. I recommend watching Batman, all (I'm sorry) of them. Watch Superman, all (again, I'm sorry). And happy welcomes to DC. Honestly, the characters are fun/interesting to find out about. Shall wait to view Woman Woman. They'd like to do a Harley Quinn movie (might have heard), then this character called Aquaman, I'd love to find out about him. I'm telling you...the costumes are LOOKING (high pitch) ever better, more epic. Tc.
