10 Underrated Films You Should Watch!

Hey Guys x

Everyone knows about that popular rating system 'Rotten Tomatoes', right?

When I'm going to watch a film, I generally google it first (if just for the running time), and their RT rating always comes up. And let's be honest, it does inform my opinion. If a film has a low score, I go into it thinking in the back of my mind that it might not be a great movie.

However, as we all know, movies are subjective. You could love a movie that your best friend absolutely hates and that's completely fine.

But I feel like a lot of people do take these ratings to heart and will actively choose not to see a film that has a particularly low rating.

So I've compiled a list of 10 films that have received less than 50% on Rotten Tomatoes, but are, in my opinion, really good movies. Not the best movies in the world, but worth much more than their rating.

Rough Night (45%)

I was surprised when I saw that this film only had a 45% rating because I absolutely love it. I've spoken about it before on the blog but it's about a group of women having a bachelorette party when things get completely out of hand and a man ends up dead. It's hilarious, extremely entertaining and definitely heartwarming. It's one of my favourite comedies and you should give it a watch if you haven't!

Annabelle (29%)

I'm a huge fan of the 'Conjuring' franchise, and there hasn't been a film in that franchise that I haven't liked, so I was really surprised when I saw what the rating for this movie was. I thought this film was really really good. It was scary, you were invested in the lives of the family that it was possessing, there was a legitimate reason for everything that happened and it was able to fit extremely well into the prequel 'Annabelle: Creation'. If you're a fan of horror, you should definitely check this out.

A Bad Moms Christmas (29%)

Now, I'm not saying that this is an amazing film, or that you're definitely gonna love it if you watch it. But I don't think it was bad enough to warrant a 29% rating. As a sequel to the first Bad Moms film I really enjoyed it. It's a fun, entertaining watch that you don't have to think too deeply about - perfect for taking your mind off of anything. And you might even laugh along the way!

Fist Fight (26%)

This movie is fast becoming one of my favourite comedies ever. I'm a big fan of Charlie Day anyway, but he is amazing in this film. It's about two teachers who get into trouble. When one 'accidentally' gets the other fired, the other challenges him to a fist fight. It's so funny! Plus there's an amazing scene involving Charlie Day's character, his daughter, and the song 'I Don't Fuck With You' by Big Sean that should definitely have pushed the movie to 50%!

This Means War (25%)

I do not understand how a movie starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy could possibly be given such a low rating. But even without them, this is a really good film! It's about two spies fighting over the same girl. The things that they do to get this girl are hilarious, and by the end you definitely have an opinion about which one she should go with!

Collide (23%)

This is one film that I wasn't gonna watch because of the rating. I persevered because I've been really into Nicholas Hoult at the moment, but I certainly didn't have high expectations. The film is about a man who works for someone doing shady stuff. However, he leaves that part of his life behind when he meets this girl that he instantly falls for. But when she falls ill and needs expensive treatment, he has to go back to doing the shady stuff. But the job isn't as simple as it seems and soon he's put himself, and the girl he loves, in danger.
The film is really good, so ignore the rating and find a way to see it!

Passengers (20%)

This, I feel, is one of the most underrated on this list, and I have no idea why. I thought this film was SO good, and I watch it every time it comes on TV because I love it. I love the premise, I love the acting, I love the direction and the set design and everything else. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone looking for some good escapism.

The Lucky One (20%)

Again, this isn't a film that's going to change your life, but I really loved it. It's a Nicholas Sparks romance, and it's one of his best. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that I enjoyed this film more than I enjoyed 'The Notebook' - which is an extremely overrated film in my opinion. There's a bit of conflict, as all Nicholas Sparks movies have, but it's pretty much a standard, lovely romance that I would watch over and over again.

Fifty Shades Darker (10%)

It is extremely fashionable right now to shit on the Fifty Shades franchise, and to be honest I wasn't a big fan of the first one. It was just a bit blah for me, with a few uncomfortable scenes thrown in. However, this film is actually good! It isn't just a will they/won't they about Ana and Christian, but rather - here's a couple, and here's the shit they have to go through. You've got abusive bosses, insane stalkers, a helicopter crash and a clingy, maybe abusive ex. Plus you see Ana make it to the top of her career and actually tell Christian that she's with him because she wants to be, not because she needs him, and I loved that. Ana has become independent, Christian has become a boyfriend rather than a dominant and I am really excited to see the final instalment!

The Roommate (4%)

This is not the best horror movie you'll ever see, but 4% for it is absolutely ridiculous! In fact, this was the film that inspired me to do this post, because I didn't (and still don't) understand how you'd give 4% to a movie that had a decent plot, great acting, a few actual scary moments and Leighton Meester in the role of the villain! I mean, maybe not enough people watched it? But either way, it's a great movie and you should definitely give it a chance!

Do you listen to RT ratings? Do you think I've missed any poorly-reviewed good films? Let me know in the comments!
