The Weekend Away | Film Review

This movie came out on Netflix a few weeks ago, and while Leighton Meester was a definite draw, I was genuinely intrigued by the story, which seemed like something I'd really enjoy.

While on holiday in Croatia, Beth's (Leighton Meester) best friend disappears. As Beth searches, she uncovers clues that lead to devastating secrets.

This film could have been a lot better. I didn't hate it, but it also wasn't that good.

From the first scenes, the characters immediately arouse suspicion. We never really get to know them, and so once we view them as suspicious, we don't ever really lose that feeling.

It's easy to be invested in the story, particularly at the beginning. As more is revealed, you are interested in knowing how it will end.

All of the relationships that existed prior to the film should have been established more. At times, it feels like they don't actually know each other. And this could be because of the way the characters are written, or it could be due to the lack of chemistry between the actors, but either way, I never really believed the relationships/friendships on display.

The story gets more convoluted and unrealistic as it goes on, and this makes you start to lose interest in it.

Ultimately, the film ends up being a bit stupid. So many silly things happen, and the characters make really stupid decisions. I put this down to the way the film was written, and would have loved if the characters were smarter, and if the climax of the story ended up being more original.

I found the ending really weak. It was one of the weakest film endings I've seen in a long time - particularly because it was so quick and didn't really feel impactful in any meaningful way.

Overall, there is both good and bad in this film. There are so many other movies with similar plots that would be a better watch than this one, particularly because it isn't as original as it could have been.

4/10
