IT (2017) | Film Review
Hey Guys x
So I saw IT at the weekend, and immediately I couldn't wait to review it! However, it might be worth mentioning that I saw the original before I saw the remake, which might alter my opinion somewhat.
So, the film begins with two boys, Bill, and his younger brother Georgie. After making a paper sailboat together, Georgie takes the boat out in the rain, where it falls down a drain. When he goes to retrieve the boat, he finds a clown that goes by the name of 'Pennywise'. When Georgie reaches into the drain for the boat, he is taken down the drain with the demented clown. 8 months later, through a range of circumstances involving some school bullies, Bill and a group of his friends who have also been tormented by the clown, decide to take him down. Whether now, or after the 27 years that it takes for It to return, they will defeat him.
I really really enjoyed this film, I liked it a lot. As a huge fan of horror, I wanted it to be truly terrifying, which it wasn't (once you get over the jumpscares), but it had that creepy air that many Stephen King adaptations seem to have (think Misery, The Shining or Pet Sematary) so that was great.
I haven't read the book, but I did read the wikipedia of the plot, and it seems like this film sticks to the original material much better than the original film.
Speaking of the original film, because it wasn't completely fresh in my mind, I wasn't really trying to compare them. However, the day after I watched this one, I went back to the original and saw that it was very in-keeping with it. In fact, most of the scenes were pretty much identical, just updated, which I really enjoyed.
The face of Pennywise was scary for sure. Not scary like the 'Nun' in the Conjuring movies, but more creepy. Like, it's not the kind of face that you'll see in your nightmares, but at the time, watching the film in the dark, it's creepy as hell!
The child actors in the film were amazing. They all acted incredibly well and made the film as great as it was. I love those kids, and I really want to see them in more stuff because they're all truly talented, as is Bill Skarsgard who played Pennywise.
Something that I didn't expect about the film was how funny it is. The banter between the boys especially was hilarious, and I loved those unexpected moments of humour.
Whether you're a horror fan or not, I'd definitely recommend seeing this film. It's not that scary, more interesting than anything else, especially if you're interested in Stephen King, as I am. But even if you don't, it's good fun and definitely something to watch with friends.
Have you seen the original IT? Will you see the new one?
