What We Hide | Film Review
After their mother suffers a fatal overdose, sisters Spider (McKenna Grace) and Jessie (Jojo Regina) decide to hide the body, fearing that they will be separated by the foster care system.
I hadn't heard much about this film before it came out, but it had a really intriguing premise that could play out in a lot of different ways, so I was looking forward to seeing it.
I liked this film.
For a start, the actresses had such great chemistry as sisters. Grace and Regina worked so well together, you truly believe their relationship and you're rooting for them from the first moment you see them because you (or at least, I) have so much empathy for them.
And they both do a great job of delivering these powerful, brilliant performances. The supporting cast were also great!
This is the kind of film where you can immediately put yourself in the characters' shoes. You think about what you would do in that situation, how you would handle things. The plot is really engaging because you can see yourself in it.
The story moves slowly and the pace never really picks up. And this isn't always a problem because you're so engaged with the story that you don't mind, but it would have been nice for things to move a bit faster.
Because after a while, not only does the situation feel like it lasts longer than it needs to, but so does the movie.
That being said, things really pick up as we get closer to the conclusion, which almost makes up for the pace.
Overall, I thought this was a great movie. It takes some really heart-breaking, powerful moments, combines them with characters that you can really love and root for, and therefore makes a story that you can be really invested in. It's definitely worth a watch.
