G.I. Jane | 100 Movies Bucket List
I hadn't heard much about this film before the infamous Will Smith/Chris Rock Oscars incident, but that alone did make me curious about it, so I was interested when I saw it on the bucket list.
I've said this before but war settings aren't my favourite, so I was a bit apprehensive going into this. However, I knew that a large focus of the film would be on the character of Jordan trying to make it in a male-dominated industry, and that's a really interesting concept.
It gets into the action really quickly, which was great. We get to know the characters as the events progress, which works in a film like this because it's shot in a way that makes us feel like we're experiencing this bootcamp alongside them.
But in saying that, even though it moved quickly, it took a long time for the film to really grab me.
The bootcamp scenes that make up the first 40 or so minutes weren't particularly interesting to me. I understand their necessity in terms of us getting to know Jordan and to fully see her standing against all of the men, but the actual scenes themselves aren't that interesting.
Other than Jordan, none of the characters felt particularly distinct. All of the men kind of blended into one, and that might have been purposeful, but it still would have been nice to connect with more than just the main character.
And in saying that, I didn't connect that much with Jordan either.
Some of the scenes also lasted a bit too long for my liking. It got to a point where they stopped moving the story forward, and shortening them wouldn't have made a difference to the overall plot. And that's not to say the film is too long, but it didn't need to be as long as it was.
The actors were great. Of course Demi Moore was the standout, but the rest of the cast played their parts well and kept things interesting!
It got a lot more interesting in the last 30 minutes, but that wasn't enough to make me suddenly start caring about things that I didn't care about for the first 90 minutes.
So as you can tell, this one wasn't really for me. There were parts I enjoyed, but not enough to say I liked the movie as a whole. I'm glad I've seen it though!
