Scream | 100 Movies Bucket List
I rewatch this film, and almost the entire franchise, at least once a year, so I was looking forward to this year's watch.
This film is iconic in the truest sense of the word - it created something really special for the slasher genre, and horror movies in general, and brought in new audiences and ideas that changed the world of horror forever.
First of all, the opening was amazing. It was a brand new idea, it messed with the audience by killing the most famous cast member first, and it spawned so many spoofs and parodies, including the Scary Movie franchise! It was a perfect way to begin the story and it's become iconic in its own right.
The cast was great. Not only did the actors do such great jobs with their characters that the characters themselves have become iconic too, but some have gone on to do great things with this film as a springboard.
Even the ones who were already household names are still forever associated with the franchise because of how iconic and well-known all the characters are.
And then the premise of the movie in itself was really interesting. From the start we have a deep rich backstory that we get fed a bit at a time with no idea how it links in, we have a masked killer which takes the story from horror to mystery, we have a group of well-written characters who we actually care about (somewhat), and by the time the film ends, we feel like we have been along for the ride in trying to find out the truth.
It's a film that really makes its audience invested in the outcome. We truly care about who the killer is, we care about who might get killed next, and the reason it spawned a franchise is because we care enough to want to see all of the characters again.
And then there's the reveal. The film did a great job of creating red herrings and setting everything up so that by the time we get there, even if we've guessed who the killer is, there are still surprises.
So, I've used the word iconic way too many times but that's exactly what this film is. The whole franchise is great but the original film, the one that started everything off, is a classic without a doubt and definitely deserves to be on all kinds of bucket lists.
