Christmas Town | Blogmas Day 10
This is a movie that premiered on the Sky Premiere channels, but it's a Hallmark movie that actually came out last year. The premise of this one isn't particularly unique, but it looked like a light, easy to watch movie, so I thought I'd give it a try.
When Lauren (Candace Cameron Bure) leaves her life behind for a new job, she ends up being delayed in Grandon Falls - a town that's closer to home than she thinks.
I actually enjoyed this a bit more than I thought I would. It is generic, but I really liked living in this world for 80 minutes.
Movies about people leaving town never really get started until the person leaves. Thankfully, this one doesn't waste any time. Speaking of which, seeing so many versions of stories like this makes me wonder how people find it so easy to just up and leave their lives behind with no warning.
The film is filled with 'coincidences' that have no explanation, making everything feel unrealistic.
I found that it took a bit of time to warm to some of these characters, because a lot of them didn't really have personalities. Even with our main character, Lauren, it takes a while to actually get to know her.
For a movie called 'Christmas Town', it is clear that the town itself was a focus for the filmmakers. It was a visually beautiful town. And while Christmas was important, it was clear that this was a town that worked all year round.
A section of the storyline that really annoyed me was about Lauren's boyfriend, who she left behind when she moved and broke up with in a letter. At some point in the film she gives him her address (presumably to write her a letter), and then acts completely surprised when he shows up. I've seen this in films before and it makes no sense to me. Why would you not expect him to show up?
However, in direct contrast with this, the section of the storyline that I found really interesting was the fostering storyline, with Dylan (Jesse Filkow) and Travis (Tim Rozon). It isn't unique enough to carry the film, but it does provide a few moments of respite from the otherwise generic story.
Like a lot of movies with plots like this, most of the main conflicts could easily be solved through better communication. But that doesn't take away from how lovely it was.
Overall, this was a really nice Christmas movie that doesn't really do anything new, but is a nice way to spend 80 minutes.
Originality - 4/10
Christmas Spirit - 4/10
Christmas Music - 1/10
It's 15 days until Christmas!
Come back tomorrow for Blogmas day 11!
