Love Wedding Repeat | Film Review

Love. Wedding. Repeat (2020) - IMDb

Hey Guys x

This is a Netflix original movie that came out a little while ago. I first heard of it because I was trying to search for a film with a very similar name ('Love, Wedding, Marriage' - starring Mandy Moore and Kellan Lutz. Not great. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime) and this came up instead. So I made a mental note to check this one out too.

It's Jack's (Sam Claflin) sister's (Eleanor Tomlinson) wedding, and he wants to make sure that the day goes off without a hitch. We see alternate versions of the day, complete with a late maid of honour, an annoying ex, a wedding crasher and the one that got away. But can any version of this day go perfectly?

This was not a great film. I can completely get where the filmmakers were going with it, but I don't think it was executed in the best way.

Having said that, it is completely clear from the start that the film doesn't take itself too seriously. The sense of humour that it shows is almost undeniably British, and there were a lot of parts of it that were genuinely funny.

However, it's not the most interesting story.

None of the characters (Except Claflin's, at a stretch) are particularly interesting, endearing or likeable.

It felt like someone grabbed a bunch of jokes and rom com tropes from other movies and mashed them together to create this movie, but it didn't have the same effect that these moments had individually in other movies. It all felt a bit much.

As I said, some parts of the film are genuinely funny. But I found that even the jokes that didn't actually end up being funny, still felt awkwardly realistic for the situation.

My favourite thing about the movie was the relationship between Claflin and Tomlinson's characters. In my opinion, this should have been the focal point of the film, rather than the half-hearted attempts at romance.

About an hour in, the film gets to the twist (aka the 'repeat' part of the title), and to be honest, it just makes all the events of the film that you've watched for the past hour seem pointless. And that was one of my biggest problems with it. It all felt a bit pointless.

However, one successful thing that came out of it was the way that Claflin exhibited an energy that was similar to that of Hugh Grant. I could completely see him becoming the king of British rom-coms in the future - but that won't be based on the quality of this film.

Overall, it felt nonsensical and pointless, and although I didn't hate it, I probably won't watch it again.

4/10

Lou
