6 Underground (2019) - IMDb

Hey Guys x

I'm a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds, so I've wanted to watch this film since it first came out. But  while it was on my radar, it was never at the forefront of my mind, so I didn't end up seeing it until recently - however, I'm so glad I finally did!

Six people make the choice to give up their lives - faking their deaths and becoming ghosts, using their specialist skill sets to complete missions that make the world a better place. But when the group face their biggest mission, and risk losing members of their team in the process, they discover that six people who don't exist can be exactly what the world, and each other, needs.

I loved this film. I didn't have high expectations for it, but it exceeded every one of them.

While watching this movie, the first thing I wrote in my notes was that the first 20 minutes of the movie were everything I wanted the entire film to be. It was funny, fast-paced and exciting. You find out so much about these characters in a really small amount of time. And while the film isn't this exciting all the way through, it never loses that excitement completely.

What I find while watching a lot of heist movies is that (for me, anyway), a lot of the time I don't really understand what the end goal of the heist is, and for this film it didn't become clear to me until the film told me word for word what their goal was, and even then I had to see almost the whole movie to truly understand.
But having said that, I was enjoying the journey so much that it didn't really matter for a minute what the end goal was - mainly due to the fact that the film was character rather than plot driven. The writers focused on the characters, and that's why the film is as good as it is.

Speaking of the writing, the film goes from the present to the past and back again multiple times throughout, but it never gets confusing or hard to follow. It also doesn't feel as long as it's 2 hr 10 minute run-time, which again is a testament to good writing.

And again with the writing, comes the characters. All 6 (7) of these characters are fleshed out and unique, and they all have interesting back stories. You feel like you really know them, even though in reality you know very little about them.

Though, as amazingly as these characters are written, the are also amazing because of the actors that portray them. Our main characters are played by: Ryan Reynolds (One), Melanie Laurent (Two), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (Three), Ben Hardy (Four), Adria Arjona (Five), Dave Franco (Six) and Corey Hawkins (Seven), and I can't imagine anyone else playing these parts. Each actor was perfect in their respective role.

The film melds a lot of different genres together, whether that be comedy, drama, action or thriller, and does it so well that you hardly notice that you're laughing one minute and your heart is pounding the next.

One thing I didn't expect from the film was for it to be so heartfelt. But there were some moments when I was feeling things that I never expected in a film that's so heavy on the action.

The only problem I had when I got to the end of the film was that, it felt like there was a huge explanation missing - it never quite felt finished, but also didn't feel as ambiguous as it could have. Just unfinished. Like time had run out, and I would have liked to find out more about One character in particular.

Overall, I loved this film and would definitely recommend it! It's on Netflix, so give it a chance and see what you think!

7.5/10
