My Opinion On YouTuber Hate!

Hey Guys x

Last month, Marcus Butler was on British cooking show 'Celebrity Masterchef' - he then made a video, reacting to the hate comments that he received due to being a YouTuber on a Celebrity show. You can watch his video below:

And I thought I'd give my opinion on this video and some of his hate.

Now, for me, I'm not one of the people who thinks that YouTubers can do no wrong, there are some things about certain YouTubers, or even groups of YouTubers, that really annoys me. If you've read my 'YouTuber Book rant', you'll see what I mean.

But for this, it's definitely something that I want to talk about because I think it's really unfair and a lot of the people that were hating on Marcus really have no idea what YouTube is, what YouTubers do or why they're even popular.

So, Marcus got a lot of hate for being a YouTuber on a Celebrity show. And while I would also be one of the people who wonder why YouTubers are suddenly being considered Celebrities, the show asked for him. If the makers of the show consider him a celeb, who is anyone else to question their decision? And even if you don't think that he's a celebrity - so what? What's he supposed to do, turn down an amazing opportunity because he's 'not a celebrity'? Because let me tell you, if that was me, I'd do everything that was thrown at me and ask for more!

Something else someone said was that YouTube was code for (I'm paraphrasing) 'sitting unemployed and wittering about on the internet' - and this annoyed me. I mean, if unemployed means having amazing opportunities, making videos and making loads and loads of money, then being unemployed is what I want for the rest of my life!
I feel like a lot of people who criticise YouTube this way are the people who really don't get it and don't want to understand it. And I get that, I mean, before I discovered YouTube, I had no idea what they did. But I would never judge them for something that I don't understand, and I don't think anyone else should either.

Also, the fact that a lot of people don't know what a YouTuber does, doesn't mean that they don't do anything. I think there are a lot of people who would like to know what a YouTuber does, or at least accepts that they do work hard even if they don't understand exactly how.

And then there's the people who don't understand why YouTube is so popular.

For me, I love YouTube, but I feel like I'm the only person who also loves traditional television! I mean, I don't even have Netflix! So maybe I'm not the best person to talk about this. But YouTube is a step between TV and real life - these people are just like us (kind of), they started making videos in their bedrooms and got so popular that they're now considered celebrities, I mean, that's like a dream come true!

And while I don't really love the things that most people find popular, like hauls and make-up collection videos, there really is something on YouTube for everyone. For example, I love to read and write, so who should I find on YouTube? Carrie Hope Fletcher!

So in my opinion, people need to be much more open-minded when it comes to things that they don't understand. And don't hate on people because of a label that they haven't even given to themselves - no YouTuber set out to be called a celebrity, that's the label that society has given them.

  1. I completely understand where you are coming from Lou! I am also a massive fan of YouTubers and the amount of hate coming from people is absolutely ridiculous! It needs to stop. I believe Anna SacconeJoly also received masses of hate when she had her miscarriage and it just isn't right. I hate seeing YouTubers suffering from hate because it really isn't true.

If you have a chance, would you be able to read my Go Ape adventure blog post?! I had immense anxiety but I conquered it and even got a certificate from the chief gorilla himself! :P laurelella.blogspot.com

    Keep Smiling and being positive,

  2. Loved reading this post! YouTube is one of my favourite things and think that YouTubers have been incredibly important in my life (and I imagine other peoples too). The fact people get hate for being youtubers is very upsetting because a lot of the time you can see how hard they've worked. You explained it much better than I ever could, great post xx
