Book Review #151: His & Hers by Alice Feeney
When a woman in a small village is murdered, newscaster Anna Andrews and her ex-husband DCI Jack Harper both suspect each other's involvement. But in a town where everyone is lying about something, will the killer be caught before it's too late?
This book was at the top of my 2026 reading list, mostly because I was really excited to check out the TV show adaptation (which I've seen and absolutely loved!). I've previously read one of Feeney's books and didn't love it, so I was slightly apprehensive about this one.
Thankfully, I loved the book!
I liked it from the opening. You get to know Anna really quickly and whether we trust her throughout the story or not, putting us on her side from the beginning is a great way to start things.
I loved the dynamic between Anna and Jack. From the second they're together we understand so much about who they were, who they've become, and how explosive the rest of the story will be.
Even though we don't trust either of them, the story never keeps us at a distance. We're dealing with this alongside them, which makes way for some great unreliable narration.
The story is expertly teased out, making everything that happens incredibly engaging.
Feeney knows how to pull the reader deep into the story. Every time I picked up the book I felt like I was right there with the characters, helping to solve the mystery. And after that happened a few times, I couldn't put it down.
The surprises are done really well. There's something different around every corner and even when you think you know what happened, there are still surprises. It's the kind of story that gets your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, which is so much fun.
I absolutely loved the reveal, though there were a couple too many red herrings to get there, which elongated the story unnecessarily.
While I thought things were maybe a bit unbelievable overall, it's still really fun and surprising.
Overall, I loved this book. The twists were so much fun, the story was really well written and I couldn't guess the ending, which was a big plus from me! Definitely one worth reading.
And I also just want to mention the show - while they made some fundamental changes to the book that it took me a long time to get on board with (such as moving the story from England to America - why?) it was still a great adaptation, and Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal were great as these characters.
4/5
